I have a cat 12 generator charging system that does not work. had the generator rebuilt but was told we have the wrong voltage regulator. The part number is 7h4160 which we are told is obsolete. does anyone know if they make a kit to change this to an altenator or a good part number for a voltage regulator.part of having an old machine I guess.

Is your No. 12 a 24 volt direct start grader or a 6 volt electric start "pony" engine grader?

    a 24 volt direct start

You haven't identified which series No. 12 grader you have. I don't have access to a series 8T parts book but the series 80C parts book for the generator group. The parts book has detailed pages devoted to the regulator and generator. An appropriate parts book for your grader will be helpful to you.

it is an 80c series and we have the parts book. The voltage regulator part is the 7h4160 and cat says this is obsolete so we have tried the guy that rebuilt the generator several parts suppliers and cat altorfer and no one can come up with a voltage regulator that will work but we were told that you can still rebuild the original if we can find one. or they said change it to an alt but no one can tell us for sure how to even do that but we know it can be done i am sure.

I'm not familiar with the generator setup on these, but I've converted a few smaller 12V charging systems to GM 1-wire alternators and it's pretty simple if you can do some fabrication. Find some handy bolts or bolt holes, probably the original generator mounting holes and drill matching holes in a plate/flatbar/angle. Bolt it on, build another u-shaped piece for the alternator to pivot on, mock up the alternator where you want it to go and then build in between the two. Then all that's left is to figure out the tensioner.

Auto-Lec Rebuilders, Sherman TX, sells a 24 volt generator to alternator conversion. auto-lec.com Alternatively (excuse he pun!), I would look for a replacement regulator from one of the Cat used parts dealers... particularly because you have already repaired the generaor!
