Looking at buying an old JD 544. Run good but the transmission is overflowing from the filler pipe and it looks like Hydraulic oil . two questions: will hydraulic oil damage the transmission if the loader was run like that? what would cause this to happen . I know about the hyd. pump runs off the tranny . so I'm guessing it's the seal or is there another way for oil to get into the tranny ?
I assume you are talking about an early 1990’s 544E ? A leaking hydraulic pump shaft seal is more than likely the culprit for the transmission oil level being overfull. The clutch cut off control piston in the transmission control valve is shifted by hydraulic oil, so it could be suspect also. Deere “Hygard“ oil was the factory fill for both the hydraulic system and the transmission.
Thank you sir , which would be easier to do first the pump seal or the clutch cutout control ?
The clutch cut off control would be the easiest to address first. If you are not under a time crunch, you could remove the clutch cut off hose from the trans control valve and see if the transmission oil level stabilizes. If the oil level doesn’t stabilize then move on to the hydraulic pump.
Thank Thank you again . will certainly take your advice . Cheers .
