Hello all I've recently found myself working on a 1996 L8000 with a 8.3L paired with an Allison transmission that has been sitting for a year. Batteries were completely dead so I tossed a new battery at it and she fired right up. Unfortunately now it doesn't want to go into any gear. It'll build pressure up, brake light goes out, i'll press the brake then attempt to shift into any gear and nothing. The little indicator on the shifter is light up and does show which gear I've selected but it'll continuously flash and not actually go into gear. The funny thing was it was driven to it's current location last year. Any ideas on things to check or places to start would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
Check the oil in the transmission of course but the flashing indicator is usually telling you that one of the conditions to go into gear was not met, i.e. parking brake not set, foot brake not depressed, etc. There are any number of other auxiliary reasons it could be not engaging, completely programmable depending on what the builder did.
I've checked the oil level in the transmission and that was fine. I'm under the impression a mouse got the best of a wire or, like you've said, there's a condition not being met. We do have the dumpbox propped up so water wouldn't sit in it. Wonder if that needs to be down fully before moving on this guy. Talking with another guy he mentioned the wires running to the battery are known to corrode and break. Anyone know which wires go where on the battery and to their destination? Thanks
Without a schematic this is a hand over hand wiring inspection, sitting a year not moved or started any number of corroded connections, rats nests, rat chewed wires, you name it. Have to find a schematic and dig thru the system.
Thanks for the info guys. We were able to get the truck moving this past weekend by hooking it to a wrecker
My Allison transmissions, on mechanical engines, require the throttle to be fully closed. Is the engine returning to base idle?
