I got my 97 super L 580 and she doesnt like starting.... Have to plug it in no matter what even if its plus 12 outside.... Kinda like some of the mid 90s 7.3L fords.. Usually if its plugged in it fires up after about 5hrs being plugged in otherwise itll just crank and smoke give it a sniff of starting fluild and away it goes. Changed lift pump filters batteries next is fuel lines and then im not sure what to try next maybe buy a newer machine Any suggestions? Thanks

Sounds like a classic example of low engine cylinder compression. Have you checked the fuel flow out of the transfer pump while turning the engine with the starter ? If all is good there it may be time to take the injectors out and have them pop-tested by a professional injection pump rebuilding facility.

a couple of things you can check.. 1> make sure the shut off solenoid is opening fully when the starter is engaged.. you'd be surprised how many don't open fully.. 2> there is an overflow valve on the return side of the inj. pump.. a banjo bolt type valve.. remove it and try to blow thru it.. if you can, its bad,, should hold 25lbs before opening.. the fuel gallery has to be filled before the pump will start to pump fuel, otherwise your pumping air.. sometimes the spring is broken or weak allowing the fuel to come in and go straight back to the tank, not allowing the gallery to fill with fuel.. 3> timing is another thing you could check.. under the pump is a plunger looking devise.. rotate the engine by hand slowly.. push in on the plunger and wait for it to click into a hole.. STOP.. now go to the inj. pump.. there is a big plug on the side of it.. that's your pump timing cover and pin.. remove it and pull the pin out and flip it over and try to insert it in the pump.. it gets inserted straight across.. You can use a mirror to look inside the hole.. there is a timing pointer that gets engaged w/ the pin.. if the pin doesn't engage or the pointer is out of the window, you have a slight timing problem.. easily remedied by removing the front screw plug, radiator side and adjusting the pump.. REMOVE THE PINS BEFORE ADJUSTING or they will break,, their just plastic.. Good luck and let us know what you found.. TPG

Thanks for the input. Ill see what i end up doing with it yet. I dont want to put much more money into it. Ill talk to my buddy whos a diesel tech and see if hed be willing to try the timing deal. Im not that confident in my abilities to do such a thing. Im too the point where im almost done spending money on it and may try sell it scrap it or trade it in on a newer 580. We shall see what transpires. Ill keep you guys posted
