I have a cat th83 telehandler that ive been working on getting the brakes fixed and some other small odds and ends. I noticed that the boom doesn't like to go out unless reved way up and at that it goes out slow. It retracts just fine at idle and reved up. Any idea where to start looking. Not seeing much online about it.
Sounds as if the package/ram seals in the booms extender cylinder are leaking by. Or, a restricted strainer/filter is partially clogged.
No leaks. It extends if you put the boom down close to the ground but once you pick it up any it stops.
I believe TD24 means that the cylinder is bypassing internally with no oil hitting the ground. It takes way more pressure to entend the boom in the vertical position. You probably need to do a cylinder by-pass test before changing any parts. Simon C
How might one go about that?
The bottom end of the cylinder has a Fitting and hose connected to it. Leave it connected and extend cylinder to end at ground level. Now disconnect the hose that is at the rod end of cylinder and put into a pail or drum. Now start machine and rev motor to 1/2 speed and try to extend cylinder more, and if oil comes flying out of hose that is disconnected, problem is in control valve. Before doing this step follow next step first. You have to hook a separate hose to the rod end of cylinder where you disconnected the original hose, put this hose into a pail also and with engine revved and attempt made to extend cylinder further if oil blasts out of the hose then cylinder is junk ( By-Passing). It is either bypassing or problem in safety circuit. Try these tests first. Simon C
For some reason I seem to remember that those worked that way. Have you run the machine before and it worked any differently?
