2 Gallon per day oil consumption

dstiversjr ยท 2014-08-17 21:30

John Deere 544d wheel loader. Operator says the machine uses or loses 2 gallons of motor oil per day. There is oil every where in the engine compartment but it appears to be wet oil leaking between the block and the cylinder head. The radiator looks at least 50% clogged and the fan shroud is broken but the operator says the machine does not over heat. Blown head gasket due to previous overheat? If so is it necessary to have the head checked by a machine shop. I do not know the hour meter reading either

sounds like you need and inframe engine rebuild. Power wash the entire engine compartment and see where the oil is leaking from... I would recommend getting the radiator boiled or properly clean as power washing a radiator can bend the fins in them and cause problems. If it is leaking that bad out of the head gasket its possible you might have coolant in the oil or the other way around. you can get a straight edge and check the head yourself or send the head out and get it rebuilt/ remachined. It is possible that your engine block could need cut as well.

That sounds good, definitely no coolant in the oil. I'll check the coolant for oil. I now have the hour meter reading 1600 hours roughly. Unfortunately until the winter when the machine goes out of service, I can't replace the head gasket. So for now I think I'll clean the radiator and oil cooler and Fix the fan shroud

With the amount of oil in/around the engine compartment you may have to pay special attention to keeping the radiator clean to prevent overheating between now and the point where you get chance to pull the engine down for a rebuild.

A good wash job and inspection should find the leak. Two gallons per day is a lot of oil to be leaking from something not under pressure. My guess is you have a couple of problems. If you can't find something like a leaking turbo lube line, oil pressure line/sensor, or something else under pressure leaking the engine is more than likely burning a good share of the two gallons. Either way the engine needs to be washed down to find where oil is coming from. Most of these loaders move air from the engine compartment out thru radiator for cooling so if not fixed soon once the radiator gets coated good it will not cool at all

UPDATE. After a thorough pressure washing the oil appears to be coming out of the crankcase breather. Excessive crankcase pressure? Possible causes? Rings?

if the engine oil filler cap is on the valve cover, try removing it while the engine is warm and idling and attempt to pour say 1/2 a quart of oil into the engine. If you end up wearing most of it then you have major crankcase pressure issues. Most likely cause, pistons, rings, etc......

If you have a lot of air coming out the blow by tube that's definitely not good. If you pull the injectors and use a rubber tip air gun and pressurize the cylinders one at a time you'll find the bad one. Could be bad/ plugged piston cooling nozzle and cooked a piston.

1600 hours, Is there a warranty? Or has it sat around forever without being used.

Thanks for the feedback fellas. Looking like this thing needs an over haul.

My biggest concern with that amount of oil floating around would be fire danger. More so if turbocharged.

    u sure it's not 16,000 hours?
