I have a 2001 953C that started losing power while driving both In forward and reverse sporadically after a few minutes of use. Especially loses power while it turns and now when I lift a heavy bucket full up it will almost completely stall out the forward momentum. Fluids are all full no leaks. Seems like a pump? Where/how do I start to check it out for the cause? Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
What is the engine doing? Is the rpm staying up, if it is is Not Power, will be Hydraulics issue. Nige and the other Cat Gurus will need a S/N
Engine RPM is staying the same. 2ZN03618
Have you checked anything besides fluid levels.? Start with this list. The detailed procedures (except for #3) will all be in your Operation & Maintenance Manual. 1. Drain water & sediment from fuel tank. 2. Replace water separator element using new O-Rings. 3. Remove head of water separator from mounting. Remove every fitting & blank plug and blow through every passage in the head with compressed air to make sure nothing is blocked with sediment. See illustration below. 4. Replace secondary fuel filter. These are basics that should be done before you even think about going into the hydrostatic drive system.
Missed you previous reply about engine rpm staying the same. Did this start to happen suddenly or did it slowly start happening over time? Does this occur with both hot and cold Trans/hyd temps?
Slowly over time. Maybe 50 hours. It was doing it prior to major service including the fuel filters. I have not replaced the fuel filter O ring and blown it out yet. It does occur at both warming and running temps for the trans and hyd temps. Currently most of the time it feels like it’s lost power, Seems to have push power going into a pile.
That, and draining the water from the fuel tank, really should be your first steps.
Can always take an oil sample and send it off to get tested as well, the hydraulic and hydrostatic oils are the same for your machine. Would tell you if something is going south, or is on its way out, and isn't invasive. Nige would know better then i would on a 953 if the pumps could go out of adjustment, i did not want to mess with pump pressures on my 973C so i took it in to the shop and let them deal with it.
No, we need Mr CMark to walk the OP through any test procedures that might be appropriate.
I agree. Sounds like an engine power issue. You need to monitor engine RPM at high idle and whilst working. High idle should be 2325+-50 RPM. At implement stall it should not go below ~2200 RPM. Tracking, it should stay above 2000 RPM. Check to see if the lever on top of the governor is hitting the stop at full throttle. The spring assembly on top is known to seize. Also there is a microswitch on the governor lever in the cab. Check that it is operating then the lever is mover to full throttle. Also check out some of these other threads. Opened the radiator and found diesel was mixed in with it. Off to the shop to replace the cracked cup or the entire head. Thanks for all the replies
