2001 Terex 860 Boom not lowering

NewbeeBrockton · 2026-03-09 19:04

Hello all, I just purchased this machine and the boom will go down a little but i will do so very, very slow to the point that it will just stop. Ive checked and i have no leaks. I purchased it from a car dealership they were the first owners and in the last 25years of this machines life they only used the front bucket for snow removal. If anyone here can help that would be much appreciated

If the boom has been locked for 25 years, I imagine the seals are dryer than a fart. I would be spraying penetrating oil on all rods and try and get some oil to the seals. It could be a hydraulic issue but i would start with the easy stuff first. Hows the hydraulic oil look?

hi The oil is good that was my first thoughts too but your sayings it most likely the seal ?

Possibly, the back hydraulics sound like they haven’t been exercised in maybe 25 years. I would be spraying the crap out of all Crome rods and trying them back and forth. It is possible the quick disconnects are completely rusted up also. How old is the hydraulic filter?

the filter is a month old . the car dealership i bought it from had it all changed

There's one thing i forgot to mention the boom will take forever to go down all the way but it will come up quick just as it should

In that case, I would probably break a hose free and check the flow and pressure on the down side of the piston. I would make sure first, that the boom controls are allowing full movement of the down shuttle valve.

I went to break the hose free to check but as i was slowly extending the boom all the way down, to make it easier to reach everything, the line leading to the top of the boom cylinder ruptured and now hydrolic fluid is leaking out . i think there might be a blockage of some sort some where

Careful with hydraulics, they can kill you! Not familiar with these machines but they may have a holding valve. Is it all the down functions, or just the boom, or the dipper, or what? I believe they have quick connections for the backhoe hydraulic functions and the return could be stopped up. Can you safely get to the valve block and visually see the valve that is not going down getting exercised? When the hose ruptured, did anything drop?

It's just the boom ,when going down, everything else is working fine. Ive looked and the valve is moving normally and no nothing went down when the hose ruptured

Some of the safety valves on the base end of cylinders require a set pressure before they will release the oil for the cylinder to retract. Simon C

    Oops. Double post.

Still, something should have moved if you were putting down pressure and a hose blew. At least, the amount of fluid lost in relation to cylinder volume. Now in thinking it’s a valve in the cylinder base or the seals. How does the rod cylinder look and how does the wiper look on said cylinder? A picture might help and if normally stored in lock position, wondering if water was able to ingress and rust seals, locking them solid. Have seen this on vertical log splitters twice and an old Ford, with a hoe on it.

How are the pins for taking grease? Joint froze up?

Wonder if a hose is collapsed. Boom down should be the easiest function. Not sure if there are quick couplers for the rear hydraulics but if there is they may be stuck or not coupled securely. My quick attach hoe has a warning to make sure the couplers are fully connected. I changed them because the balls in the coupler had flat spots.

I took it apart and the seal just disintegrated. it was the problem going to order replacements for that and the busted hose. THANKS FOR THE HELP !!!!!!
