mattyt1984 ยท 2022-10-10 18:57

I bought this truck knowing it needed a transmission rebuild it just has a 5 speed no splitters or rear end gear. Issues is is it only goes into 2nd 3rd and 5th gear. 4th gear grinds badly and wont work at all. 1st and reverse do work but it is extremely hard to move shifter into those gears. The VIN is 1HTSCABMX2H405621. Shifter handle say spicer on it. Does anyone have diagram or any info on trans?

According to Navistar's website it should be: TRANSMISSION, MANUAL {Spicer ES46-5A} 5-Speed Manual; With Cast Iron Case and Clutch Housing Repair manual is available for download at: http://www.spicerpartsmanuals.com/Spicer-ES46-5-ES56-5-Service-Manual.pdf They are a simple transmission to rebuild.

Thank you. Does transmission need to be removed from where it bolts to engine?? Or can I take trans apart further back??

It has to be unbolted from the flywheel housing. Then disassemble it with it standing on the bell-housing. I drilled a hole in my work bench for the input shaft to protrude through.

Looks like I may be lucky I took top cover off and square piece that's shifts the slides has a piece broken off. Both broken pieces are accounted for. Where can I buy this part shown below.

That is what's known as a tunnel type transmission.

I have rebuilt a few over the years The synchronizers wear out and I have seen a couple where the rivets that hold the shift fork to the rail came loose and they were difficult to get into certain gears. I had one come in last summer where the driver broke the shift lever below the pivot. It is 1" diameter hardened steel. I can't imagine how that happened.

Of european design-remember the ZF 5 speed ford used behind the 7.3's, said in the manual do not tow in 5th gear. Most tunnel types are set up on a jig, the ZF had pressed gears to shaft. As soon as just enough time passed ford stopped supplying that transmission after the last build. The VW bug was tunnel type right along with most german cars. All jigged. The truck transmission to stay away from is the Rockwell RMX series, mainly 10 speeds. Parts are expensive and time consuming to rebuild, best to yard it and install a Eaton 10 spd C. The new Eaton EEO automated is one expensive gear box right along with the Detroit DT12, $18,000 for a replacement through Detroit. Not many aftermarket rebuilders in that area.

Previous employer is getting Semi Autos in his next gen trucks, driver fatigue compensators accorded the sales information, yeah right where did not have a offering for conventional 13spds. Added almost $10000 to the new truck prices, warranty again boosted the new Petes to over $255,000. Is a no win condition where sales are decreasing as fast as low production had cost the manufacturers and warranties eat up profit lines.

    They still sell gliders?

I keep saying there has to be a market for a Marmon type company to come along and start building the truck that everybody really wants instead of this computerized garbage. Switches on the dash to wires instead of CANBUS everything, a 4 speed air conditioner, that sort of thing. Be prepared to scale up big time if they start really flying off the lot. Of course you won't find anybody who knows how to build them or anything like that, minor details. Look at the company Green APU, they advertise how easy their stuff is to work on/get parts for.

Nope. The big three have the high percentage of the market, very hard for a new comer to enter that. Plus the big three have the available drive train components wrapped up spoken for. And who is going to supply the power unit? Detroit won't, Cummins maybe but they are in a tough time supplying.

Stuck with what have unfortunately as noted, Gliders are now a memory of the past to not be reborn due to Fed Hands on that pie piece.
