Few issues we can’t solve: Takes 20-39 secs to shut off (often have to push the fuel peddle to kill it) -we lost 10kms of road speed (torque converter adjustment, going bad)? -full throttle sounds like it’s hitting rev limiter -throttle is sticking and idles at 1100 rpms where should I start looking? we changed a fuel filter/air filter but no changes. Serial number cat420dkbln10384 is there a repair manual I could purchase online?
There was a batch of bad injection pump castings, like on my 420E, that don't shutoff instantly at key off. Anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds. Only cure is a replacement injection pump, at least on my E machines. Ironically, only one of my 420E had that issue. What is your serial number? Did you change both fuel filters? When changing the first fuel filter (water separator), when you transfered over the water bowl, did you ensure that the O-ring was in between? For throttle sticking, is the hand throttle cable fully retracting at idle? You'll have to remove a cover to see the cable end at the bottom of the hand throttle. And, again, the serial number of the unit, to check about bad batch of injection pump and to make further diagnosis easier. We need the last 8 digits, and, if you worry about someone borrowing your serial number, just use asterisks for the last two digits. For example, my 420E are KMW009** and KMW010**

Loss of power while driving a sign of injection pump going bad? can’t figure out why my backhoe has no power. hydraulic power is good but actually driving it is painful. Come to a hill and you have to down shift to make it up. also does anyone know a good source to get a service manual for it? 2004 caterpillar 420d
Loss of power without excess exhaust smoke is, most likely, a fuel supply issue.
look in the usual places for Cat Publication reference RENR3570. They are not cheap BTW.
Blueish rich smoke when you hold it wide open...also stutters a bit. The. When you shut the key off you have to floor it for about 15-30secs before it dies latch valve cause this problem? Injectors? Injection pump?
I replaced the latch valve and that fixed the issue of the backhoe not shutting off! now it still sluggish and if you go from idle to wide open it sputters /blueish smoke. If you go slowly from idle to wide open there is no sputter but still lack of power would you get injection pump done or take the injectors out to get tested?
Does anyone know how much psi should be at the injection pump from the fuel filter?
Output pressure during the first ten seconds of cranking: Normal pressure ... 42 to 70 kPa (6 to 10 psi) Minimum pressure ... 30 kPa (4.4 psi) I know you stated that you had changed the fuel filter, but have you been into all the fuel lines & fittings to ensure that they are clear.? The reason I ask is that it's all too common to find blockages like the one shown in the photos in post #3908 on the link below. Unless you do the basics you can easily get caught out....... HeavyEquipmentForums
Don't overlook the return line.
No I haven’t been into all the lines. when remove the fuel line at the injection pump it flows great. I changed the fuel filter again today, and it studdards in between 1500-1700 rpms with blueish smoke. Under load it’s still a dog. is there anyway to check the injection pump without taking it off?
"I changed the fuel filter again today,"... Two filters on that machine.
It looks like only 1 filter (filter & water sep combined) from machine S/N BLN10300-Up
Sorry. It's just that my 416Cit, 426Cit's, and 420Eit's all have two filters. So, back to the fuel supply issue. I strongly recommend removing the whole filter housing, removing the pump from the top, and cleaning out the entire housing. I think I have pictures in the skidsteer sub forum.
We installed a in line pump 10-14 gpm 35psi and eliminated the filter housing with a in line filter. Still chugging at 1500-1700 with some blue smoke. injector test next? There is no way of testing those or injection pump in the machine?
Need some input from thepumpguy....
We installed a in line pump 10-14 gpm 35psi and eliminated the filter housing with a in line filter. still smokes bad blue then clears up at wot but still has lack of power. injectors testing or injection pump?
Who’s the pump guy? Can you tag him in this post? thanks for everyone help, just trying to get this ol girl up and working good again!
Search the members list for “thepumpguysc” and send him a PM. That’s probably the quickest way. The first thing he’s going to ask is what make of FIP the engine has. A photo helps here.
Changing tack somewhat. Have you tried removing the engine oil filler cap.? What happens when you run the engine at high idle RPM with the cap off.? Looking for what sort of blowby levels the engine has.
