I need to replace the starter. This one just spins but does not engage and the machine is sitting outside with a snowplow blade attached so lifting the cab is out of the question in this situation. Can the starter be accessed and replaced from underneath by removing the skid plates? Other options? Thank you!
Thank you for your reply!
Sounds like the solenoid isn't engaging. If you can get at it you could try lightly tapping the solenoid or starter to see if it will engage. Having a helper turn the key while you tap would be the best. Boosting may help too. I've had the starter not engage but engage with a boost. It's a real pain in the winter when you have starter problems. What engine is it?
Thank you for your reply. The machine is a 2007 ASV RC100 which performs beyond my needs. I tried both of your suggestions 4 times with a helper but no luck. Tried boosting but no success there either. All that seems to remain is to replace the starter which spins but does not engage. Appears to me to be a non-functioning solenoid switch. This is all surprising to me since the starter only has 121 hours on it since new. Oh well, stuff happens and it's always something.
Can you use a wrench or heavy wire to bypass the solenoid and go from the battery cable post to the other large post on the solenoid?
On this particular year and model, much of the work must be done from the top or the bottom. The starter can be reached by dropping the second skid plate or by bleeding the boom cylinders and tipping the cab. The battery can only be accessed by tipping the cab. The machine is an absolute beast but a pain to work on. Thank you for your response.
