Hello first post here, thank for any help you can offer. I am looking at potential buying a 2009 Cat 256c with approximately 2500 hours to repair and then sell. The issue with it currently is the right hand side drive motor has failed and needs to be replaced which i can do fairly easily, the left-hand motor also failed and was replaced recently. My concern/question is how much damage was done to the rest of the hydraulic system due to all the metal contamination caused by both motors having fail and is this machine worth trying to save. They are advertising it at 16000$ cad new motor will run me 4000$ and new oil, filter and my labour so lets say the repair is 5500$ dose it makes sense to buy it.
If a traction motor grenaded on the hydraulic side, the pieces would be in the entire system and could not be repaired properly without cleaning the whole system. that means control valve rebuild, pumps rebuilt, hose all changed . Every where the oil could of went needs to be cleaned or rebuilt. No one would guarantee a job like that without dotting every i and crossing every T. Why would you be able to do it better without doing the whole job? If it seems like too good of a deal it probably is. Simon C
That's what i was thinking as well and by the time all repairs and rebuilding is done the cost would be so high there's no profit margin, I will pass on this one. Thank you for your reply.
Most often trying to fix up machines with major problems for resale is a losing proposition.
