no start issue , turns over but wont start, it started in late summer it was hard to start but when it got cold it wont start at all blow black smoke when trying to start but wont fire , i have replaced glow plugs battery and starter changed all the fuel filters and oil filters , i took off the valve cover and cranked over and white smoke comes from the intake side, i called local mechanic and he said it might of jumped timing, is there a way to tell this before i hire them to pull the motor
Welcome to HEF Brian ! The "D" series are notoriously famous for hard starting issues. Cranking speed over 200 rpm? Did you check fuel pressure while cranking? Does it hold at least 4 psi for 10 minutes after cranking? When you had the valve cover off, did you look and the base of the injectors to see if any compression was leaking around the injectors? Any pushrods bent? Those engines also need 0W-40 full synthetic engine oil. That was changed from 15W-40 years ago. The synthetic helps with cranking speed for cold starts. While cam timing is a possibility, it can only be checked with special tools, so don't pull the trigger on engine removal. Let's start with some basics. Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? Is the valve cover still off? Full machine serial number?
thanks for your responce, i didnt check the fuel pressure when we had the valve cover off, could you please tell me how exactly i could check the pressure
so not knowing much about mechanics the guy that looked at didnt pull the rocker arms out to see the rods but when we turned it over they all seemed to be moving fine by the looks of them,
also the primer on the water separator after cranking over gets real hard to press after cranking over i dont know if that says i got good pressure and it holds the pressure for days
oh and where do i get the full machine serial number
the valve cover is not off but i can take it off again if you need me to to run it through some tests
Enter service mode of the monitor. That is done by pressing and holding the menu button until the words SERVICE MENU appear in the screen. Go to diagnostics, sensors, then fuel pressure. Check there first. Report fuel prssure at cranking. Then when you stop cranking, do not turn ign off. See if fuel pressure holds at least 4 psi for 10 minutes. If pressure is not high enough, then a gauge may have to be installed at the fuel filter to confirm sensor integrity. While you are in there, post any codes that are active or stored. DO NOT remove the rocker arms. The engine has hydraulic lifters that need to be bled down after rocker arm removal or the rods WILL bend at the next start up. The pushrods are checked by twirling them with your fingers to see if they wobble. You may have to put each cylinder one at a time to TDC to check the pushrods. We will not worry about that right now since the cover is back on. Normal.
