246b died on me while operating, would only run with key in start position, found the FSS fuse was blown, replaced it got 5 minutes of run time it blew again, replaced it a second time knowing there was an issue but needing to troubleshoot it now when the key is put to the start position the FSS and Ignition relays both blow instantly a service manual would be really helpful if anyone has one they can email [email protected] thoughs and places to look for shorted wires or can a bad switch cause these to get shorted?
I can’t help with a Service Manual but a Serial Number will get you the appropriate electrical schematic.
thatd be much appreciated CAT0246BJ PAT03067 i should be able to trace the issue down once i have a schematic is there a reason or a magic CAT uses to keep their service manuals off the internet? they seem like the only or atleast the most noticeable brand for having such tight lipped technical data seems like once one pdf got out then itd spread across the internet like wild fire like most service manuals do
The fact that they are generally in paper form could have something to do with it. It's hard to squeeze a book down a cable or a fibre optic.......
i thought they had it online in that cat software website "SIS" but anyway thats neither here nore there, how do i find electrical schematics? is there a way to get those for free
ahh i see youve sent it to me in a message, much appreciated
They do, but online in SIS a complete service manual is maybe a couple of hundred separate documents and downloading each one as a pdf format document is not really a feasible proposition. All the information is there though, it must be said. A complete Service Manual for your Serial Number is Cat Publication reference RENR6445 which retails at $915 in paper form or $640 on CD.
Even with the Wiring diagram this issue is still kicking my ass any help would be appreciated ive traced out a bunch of circuits from the blown fuses and the key switch and started removing relays and draws from those circuits without any progress, the FSS fuse still blows as soon as the Key is turned to ON and the IGN fuse Blows as soon as the key is turned to Start the FSS fuse pin shows 7ohms without a fuse in it and the IGN one shows 22ohms with no fuse 7ohms shouldnt pop a 15amp fuse so something must change once the current starts flowing ive scoured the whole machine even lifted the cab looking for a rubbed harness with no luck i need the machine back running asap im pretty technically savvy it just hard to narrow a problem down when you dont have anywhere to start, i hoped removing parts of the circuits would narrow it down but it seems not to Can reply here or drop me a line at my email [email protected] Or shoot me a text 780-803-8755 at this point id pay for someones time if they can point me in the direction of the failure i dont understand the Key Switch's start wire being shorted as the schematic shows it only goes from the key straight to the "Operator Interlock Cont" which i assume is a computer of some kind
You may have found the problem. The interlock ECM is under the floor. They tend to get buried in **** and start corroding.
Apart from that, the 307 Orange start wire goes through an arc suppressor and then becomes 327 Pink, which ties in to the fuel priming pump circuit.
Kind of sounds like a FSS problem to me. That is where everything started and would make sense why it would only run with key in start position. The hold part of the solenoid is probably shorted to ground.
This ought to be your first stop unless you have been there already. You may be somehwat shocked at the state of things under the floor. What I usually suggest is to unplug all the main harness connectors of the circuits involved, then working from the fuse/relay panel with the key on start reconnecting them one at a time until the fuse blows. The last one you reconnected before the fuse blew is where the problem lies.
