Can anyone help ?the cig lighter plug in my truck wasnt working (it had the earth wire loose) so i fixed it and then plugged my amber flashing/spinning light ( roof mounted) into it and as soon as I did it blew the halogen 12v bulb in the light and the motor that spins the light started spinning twice as fast as it normaly would ? So i plugged a portable light into it and it also blew the bulb. I then stuck a multi meter into the cug lighter plug to test how much voltage i was getting out of the cig lighter plug and it read 24v ? why is it doing this, shouldnt it have a regulator to put out only 12v at the cig lighter socket ? or do i need to get one ? any info would help Rami1
what vehicle is this on?.. older trucks would only be putting out battery voltage or someone in the past may have dodged it up with your flashing light you can jjust change the globe to a 24v one and depending on the brand if it drives from a rubber band mounted on a pulley on the motor you should be able to move the rubber band to another sized pulley on the motor shaft to slow the speed down
rare ss its a isuzu FSR 1986 iill have a look for that band on the shaft. cheers
Even new Isuzu's (5yr old) have 24v lighter - I specified a 12v one when I ordered mine They do have '24v' on the lighter button though.
rare ss does that mean everything i plug intp the cig lighter must be 24v ??? i dont think my GPS is ? could there be a fault somewhere ?? or do i need to get a regulator of some sort
so everthing i plug in needs to be 24v ? can i get this changed to 12v if so how and is it easy to do myself ? cheers
Cigar lighters are 24v and cigarette lighters are 12v.
what about rollies ??? :cool2
i brought an inverter from eBay
You need to buy a 24v - 12v voltage reducer & run the cig. lighter from it. Not hard to do - if you're not sure, a sparky would have it done in minutes.
I would just re-wire it. Run a fused wire from the battery directly to the plug. Connect to the + on the grounded battery so you have 12v.
I've always had trouble doing that - the battery running the 12v never seems to last as long as the other one. - 2c worth
thanks fellas for all the info. i found this on ebay and it seems to be the best way to go. its a 24v to 12v step down converter that you plug staright into the cig lighter and it converts the 24v to 12v. thanks again
