3010 JD backhoe steering &brakes

Old Junk Man ยท 2015-06-08 00:46

John Deere 3010 Backhoe Im new here. Ive been messing with old equiptment for many decades. I just bought a 3010 JD backhoe. Apparently they only made less than 1,000 of them in the early 1960,s The power steering & brakes don't work. the loader & Backhoe have plenty of Hyd power. I read where the 3010 tractors have a screen on the intake of the transmission pump. This industrial tractor doesn't seem to have one at that location. Is the steering & brakes hyd system isolated from the loader & backhoe Hyds? There is a Hy tank on the left fender. any info will be greatly appreciated. Now im not afraid to tear into it and can afford to spend some dollars. I bought it for $2300 and If I put that much more into it I will still have a cheap machine. I had posted this thread in the wrong forum earlier today.

Could you post a photo of your machine ? I grew up on a farm and the only John Deere 3010 tractors I have ever seen are agricultural tractors. So, you may have gotten a better response if your questions were in the Agricultural Equipment section of the forums. 3010's with loaders are quite common. One with a backhoe on it is very unusual. I am curious what the backhoe attachment looks like. Is it mounted on the 3 point hitch ?

J D 3010 Wheel No its not at all like 3010 a farm tractor .its a heavy build industrial version squat and low to the ground. it has a heavy 3/8 steel nose. was originally painted yellow. It don't have a 3 point or PTO. it has a heavy front axle. the backhoe has a large Hyd motor for the swing built right into the attachment. it has wobble stick controls. From the info I gleaned from the internet they only made then three years 61-62 & 63. J D called them the 3010 Wheel? they only made about 844 of them. I suppose ive got a white elephant? There was some reason the guy who sold it to me was anxious to sell it. I don't know how to post pictures here yet. ive ordered a manual maybe it will help ?

I learn something new every day. Yes there is a John Deere 3010 wheel industrial tractor. I am afraid you did indeed buy a "white elephant". There can't be too many survivors when so few of them were made so long ago. Here is a link to about all the information you will need for it. http://www.tractordata.com/industrial-tractors/000/2/4/240-john-deere-3010.html Does this look like yours ?

  4. #4Old Junk Man2015-06-08 15:49

Yes that's exactly what mine looks like. Thanks for the link. Oddball for sure! Im not worried I still don't regret buying it. I just want it for our own use . it will operate as is.I just don't like the armstrong steering. If nothing else I take a big truck steering sector and power steering pump and rig that up. I really don't need brakes. keep a outrigger close to the ground and the loader bucket can be used also.

  5. #5Old Junk Man2015-06-08 15:54

Yes I looked at the link. Mine is one of the 648 with the diesel engine. and they only made 840 total. Hopefully many componets from the farm tractors will interchange?

Ok I think ive got this picture stuff figured out. My grandson Chris who is 19 monthsthinks he is gonna show me how its done.

  7. #7Tinkerer2015-06-08 16:50

Chris sure is a cute little guy. He needs some suntan lotion. Here is another link to information on the 3010. http://www.johnnypopper.com/weirddeere/NG/The_3010Wheel.html If the steering is so hard there may be a piston leaking in one or even both of the hydraulic cylinders. I would think a lot of the ag tractor parts are the same for both versions of the 3010's.

Yep that little guy is ate up with engines and stuff. He constantly makes engine noises. He is my youngest sons child. He named him after his older brother who was a natural. Our original Chris was driving tractor raking hay at five. He could weld at 7 and overhauled a B Farmall at nine by himself. Unfortunately he died in a car crash at 17. That was over twenty years ago. This little guy seems to have inherited & blessed or cursed? with the same talent. I baby sit him because his parents and my wife works. Im not trusting anyone with my buddy. So he is my shadow and I get a big kick out of him. Im thinking its in the transmission pump as both the steering &.brakes don't work .I ordered 6 new transmission filters and a 720 page manual. I plan to remove the trans cover and do some exploring. I want to clean the rear housing and change the fluid with the high dollar JD hy tran fluid. The stuff that I drained out looked like milk. and the filter was pretty heavy. who knows this may be the only one left? I already know a lot more about it than when I bought it.

I have 2 JD 3010 AG tractors and can get parts no problem. Your loader and hoe part might be a different story. I also have a 400 TLB that uses the 2020 AG tractor as the base unit. The problem with your brakes sounds like the hyd seals to the brakes in your axle are blown out. The axle housing will need to be removed from the (rear)housing to get to the brakes. Test the pressure coming out of the (power brake) unit under the petals before get to involved in the axles. Also if the brake linings fell apart, the fibers will circulate through the HYD. system and clog your filters. My 400 (2020) uses the tractor HYD system with no external tank so you my have different filters than mine.

    Welcome.

Hello OJM .. I looked up 3010 tractor. Deere has a kit to rebuild the steering valve ... Looks to me it's part number AR39585 Costs about $130 If the problem is the cylinder, any hydraulic shop can repair it. Here's a link to the parts list in PDF ... http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/pdfs/PC0736.pdf Parts are a big reason I like Deere Equipment. They may be pricey,, but they are available. I've an old 30 year + lawn mower that I keep alive.

If you will look on the left side of the picture near Chris,s foot you can see the top of the Hyd tank. It has a square plate with a handle bolted to it and a round filler cap.

  13. #13Delmer2015-06-09 21:28

I wonder if there's a filter inside of that plate on the hydraulic tank. Any chance there's a model number on the backhoe? I can't find any info on the backhoe. Probably best to wait on the manual before tearing into it. If the hydraulics are combined then there's 10-15 gallons of fluid in the backhoe cylinders and lines that will contaminate your new fluid if you don't flush it out.

Ok I was working on the beast this evening after it cooled off a bit. Power washed the hecck out of it. Removes some of the green paint and lots of crud. I traced the hoses and at present the hyd that feeds the loader and backhoe is isolated from the steering and brakes. it uses the tank on the fender (which looks factory) there is asuction line at the bottom of that tank and it runs to the front hyd pump. From there a line runs to the loader valve and from that return to the backhoe controls and a return from those valves to the tank near the top. there might be a filter in the fender tank? If theres not ill need to install a filter in the return line someplace. Now it may not always been set up like this after 50 years anything can be changed? Ok tomorrow AM at the crack of dawn . im going to pull off the trans top cover. If that internal trans pump is bad or isn't up to snuff. ive got a hyd pump from a JD combine that ran the steering & brakes on the combine. it is belt driven. so I could rig it up and use a intake hose from the trans drain plug location to feed it and plumb it back into the steering & brake system. Im pretty confident I can make it work to suit me. and the good thing is with the loader & hoe hyds isolated from the trans & steering I can use regular hyd oil in that system. if I blow a hose im not losing high dollar JD fluid! the only place ill need the high dollar fluid is the trans.

  15. #15Tinkerer2015-06-10 09:16

The filter is #AR28271 R. Also #39 is a screen in the assembly.

  16. #16Old Junk Man2015-06-10 09:36

Ok I was out there at daylight. pulled the cover from the rearend and all that was there was a ring gear spider assembly and a empth rear hole . except for a mouse nest and mud wasp nest. so I pulled the front cover off. there are two clutch packs and the trans gears. and there is a pump that is driven by the shaft that the clutch packs and trans gears fit on. and the pump is stabbed right through the middle by that shaft. a complete disassmebly would be necessary to service that pump. on top of the pump is a valve body and two steel lines run from that to the trans case. then two external lines run from outside of the trans case to the steering & brakes. I didn't find any clutch or brake material in the trans. im going to clean everything up thoroughly and change fluid & filters. I will use the proper JD fluid. If that don't fix it. I will mount a pump and convert the steering & brakes into external hyds. my tractors hyd system looks nothing like the diagram recently posted. there isn't a screen anyplace. just a cartrege filter. ill take some pictures later today.

  17. #17Old Junk Man2015-06-10 10:45

Ok here are pictures. thetank on fender. the empty rear housing excepr for mud wasp & mouse nest the trans top showing valve body. the valve body removed. lines to case. lines outside of trans case.

  18. #18Old Junk Man2015-06-10 10:56

Heres some more pictures.the steering sector has the power steering built into it. There are no external hyd steering cyls. the brake assembly is mounted ahead of the rear axle housing it rides on the pinion gear shaft. the front hyd pump only works the loader and backhoe.

  19. #19Tinkerer2015-06-10 11:06

Aren't the top two photos showing the filter Assembly ?

  20. #20Old Junk Man2015-06-10 11:37

yes there is a paper carterege filter in there. JD wants $35 for that filter. I ordered 6 filters online for $50 including shipping. However there isn't a intake tube or screen . theres a steel line running from that filter location up along the outside and to the pump valve body. those two lines one is a intake suction and the other is a outlet pressure line. From the evidence all the little brackets in place and every bolt being the same and all having lock washers ect. Im shure that Im the first guy that has every taken this part of the machine apart. There isn't a piece of machinery in the world that cant be fixed. All it takes is time & money.

  21. #21Tinkerer2015-06-10 20:24

Part #37 is the plug the retains the screen. I will try and find where it is located tomorrow. My brother and a nephew both have 3010's. Although they are ag tractors I would think the industrial tractor you have, used the same transmission case.

  22. #22Tinkerer2015-06-10 22:15

I sent a text to both family members. My nephew didn't know there is one in the transmission. I got a confusing reply from the other one. But, he has had them out of a couple of different 3010's. The steel screen is cleanable and also available from JD for $57.00. He also said he was confident the industrial and ag tractor used the same transmission. The screen is part #AR26374 .

  23. #23Old Junk Man2015-06-10 22:38

I cleaned up everything this evening. shined a light down into the trans to really see if it was clean. and there isn't any screen. This machine uses a different trans case & arrangment for power steering & brakes. Im convinced that the trans and steering & brakes have always been a separate system from the loader and backhoe Hydraulics. the pump is stabbed right through the middle by the top counter shaft. it only has two metal lines attached to it. and the immediately exit the housing and become external. when I pulled the filter off the trans fluid didn't drain. my plan is to remove every line and fitting and make certain the are al clear. I certain there are pressure relief valves also. Put a new filter and JD oil in it and it might work? If not I will mount a external pump. That trans pump must be working because the reverse and low & high clutch packs work. the valve body on the top of the pump controls them. there must be a blockage or open pressure relief valve.

  24. #24Old Junk Man2015-06-12 17:13

Ok Ive been looking at the pictures. and the exhaust on my machine is on the opposite side than the pictures of 3010,s shown. also my wheel centers are different. and my machine has three clutch packs. one for forward and two for reverse. so I started a new thread. and thanks for all the replies.

  25. #25Old Junk Man2015-06-17 11:13

Ive decided ive been barking up the wrong tree. After opying down a lot of casting numbers. Ive determined the tractor is a 2010 wheel. And I eventually found a screen hyd filter. its behind a cast cover that has a temp guage and has 3 three eights bolts that hold it on. right behind the clutch on the bottom of the housing. the screen was pretty crusty & gooey. also theres a intake screen and return line hyd filter in the fender mounted hyd tank. that was dirty also. so I removed the tank and pressure washed all the crud & sludge out of it. now to try and find the cartridge filters I need?
