304 ccr wont start

CMLandWorx ยท 2025-01-24 16:54

I have a cat 304 ccr mini ex. Recently had fuel freeze in the filter and now the machine will not start. We have replaced the small electric fuel pump and verified we have fuel coming out of that. We have heated all of the lines to insure no more ice. Machine will turn over and occasionally fire but will not start up and run. Next steps will be to take fuel lines off of injectors and insure fuel is getting to them. Any help would be appreciated.

You probably need to be very certain you know the proper procedure for bleeding fuel lines on common rail engines. I don't know that procedure, but I bet someone here does. Don't jump the gun on this!

A Serial Number from your side would be a help to anyone looking for information.

Don't believe this unit is common rail. If pencil style injectors, try putting about 1 psi of air into fuel tank with a rag ball over the fill hole to hold back pressure and see if any fuel leaks on the way to the injection pump. Could be sucking air somewhere, air could cause it to leak and voila the leak location found. If it fires right up with air on tank you may still have a line sucking air somewhere. Cheap try before firing the parts cannon. Cannot remember if yours has a fuel solenoid? Simon C

It does but if they are getting a cough and a splutter out of it every so often then the assumption would be that it is moving correctly to the run position. @Simon C - It's not common rail as you suspected and it does have glow plugs. I wonder if they are working.?

I had no idea if the engine is common rail or not. Just a precautionary statement. Good luck on finding the issue.

Nige is correct, not surprisingly. I did check one of that era a few years back and yes glow plugs. Wonder if those glow plugs are working or some burnt. If you need to get it going blow out the air filter housing, pull out both filters and run 2 heat guns at the same time into the air intake and it will fire up if there is fuel. Have done this trick at minus 35C and fired within 10 seconds. Might have to do some trouble shooting if glow plugs are not working. Keep us posted. Simon C
