Jd 323d skid steer hard to start due to low fuel pressure, but once it’s running it rolls black smoke even at an idle. I’ve removed the muffler air filter and unhooked the hose on the intake side of turbo. Still thick black smoke. Any ideas?
Turbo turning? With the engine off, reach in and see if you can turn the turbo shaft. Check for play as well. Serial number?
Yes the turbo is turning, no free play or scarring.
Codes?
And serial number.
Low fuel pressure, you say. Please elaborate.
I have a 2012 323D that started doing the same thing today. Constant black smoke and checked all the same things as listed above. Any other possibilities?
Did you check the air breather and air filter they could be plugged
Yes I did. Filter was a little dirty but not too bad
Welcome to HEF Wt ! Serial number? Did you check for codes? Check the short air intake hose that goes into the valve cover/intake manifold for splits. While you are at it, check all the air intake system hoses for splits.
All air hoses are in good shape. There are no active codes in the computer
Stored codes? Turbo good? Do you have a temperature gun?
Turbo is good. Only stored code is an old one for drive speed sensor. What do I need temp gun for?
Did you try running it just for a couple of minutes with the air filter removed as a test.? Even a slightly damp filter can look clean but not allow enough air to pass through it.
What Nige said^^^^ Your machine has black smoke at idle or only at full rpm? Full load only? As far as the hoses on the intake system, did you run your hand over the hoses? Did you look all the way around the circumference of the hoses with a mirror? Especially near the turbo where it enters the valve cover? Is your hose the updated hose with heat shielding at the valve cover end? I ask because that has been an issue with the "D" series with the exact complaint of black smoke/no codes. Is your hose the updated hose with heat shielding at the turbo end?
Checked all hoses and could not find any leaks at all. Hose does not appear to be updated one but I am not sure. Machine black smoked under a load and at high rpm. Not much at idle.
Also, ran with no air filter and it did not make a difference.
Black smoke is from lack of air or too much fuel. Thing's like air intake and exhaust restrictions can cause this. So can a turbo, bad injectors, bad unit pump/pumps, low fuel pressure, in the 4024/5030's - valve cover gasket leaks or cam timing, or even parasitic load like having the auxiliaries stuck on.
