330F Acert Turbos

HCK prefix Cat 330F. When one of the turbos fails, do they get replaced in pairs or is it acceptable to replace just the failed one? One has blown and sending oil into the aftertreatment system, so major cleanup required here. Anything else a guy should look at doing once its all apart?

How many hours on it.? That could influence the decision whether to do just one or both. BTW there was updated engine software introduced April 2019 for HCK1-Up to aid in preventing turbo bearing damage during cold starts.

I think its got about 4,000 hours on it. Bearing on the turbo mounted to the exhaust manifold let go, oil out both sides. As to software update, not sure if it ever got that update, I know nothing of the history of this unit prior to mid-2020 unfortunately.

Got any way of checking the installed engine software P/N.? By the sounds of the failure mode it might just be preventable with the software upgrade. "Description Of Change: New engine software is available. The new engine software enables the idle hold strategy and aligns the engine and machine minimum idle hold speed to 800rpm. This strategy protects against turbo bearing damage during cold start conditions."

Unfortunately no ET for us (yet). Dealer is coming to pull a PSR for us and I'll see about getting it updated. Have the upper turbo off, still have to inspect the lower and then remove the CAC and aftertreatment for cleaning.

The software version can be viewed through the display monitor. You may need fff2 or 9992 password.

Ok awesome. Didn't know you could see it in there. Thanks.

Lower turbo looks ok. From what I remember of Cat's reuse & salvage criteria for turbos it looks ok - either wheel not contacting the housing and no obvious damage to the wheels on either end. Exhaust side is full of oil but that's to be expected when the upper turbo takes a dump.

You should ask if there is a policy adjustment or warranty review. Cat was always pretty good about taking care of stuff like that. It's the dealers who won't bother to ask for help when something like this occurs. They would rather be paid street rate for the fix rather than the factory warranty rate. If you don't ask, the answer is always no.

So a quick update: ECM software was not up to date. That has since been rectified, hopefully it makes a difference. The CEM is a sealed unit (welded shut) and is not serviceable - no internal parts available from Cat. Basically the only option is replacement of the entire CEM. Oil was actually spraying out the exhaust pipe and down the side of the machine so I'm pretty certain all the catalysts inside are completely oil saturated. There was oil going into the CAC but fortunately no oil had made actually made its way out of the cooler and into the intake manifold. As of right now its a waiting game with parts. I'll update once I have it back together.

Got it all back together a few days ago and it all seems good. Ran it for an hour and no codes or faults. The dealer came out and updated the CEM S/N, reset the DPF service counter and ran a successful emission system test. Thanks everyone.
