i bought an older flc sat for a few years. has a b model in it went to full it with water, and noticed coolant was leaking out of the dipstick. it filled the pan up with coolant. i pulled the pan and it looks to me as if the leak is coming from the back of the camshaft. whenever it starts leaking it pours down every side of the block all at about the same time. is there anything else that could be causing this besides a cracked block. im thinking it may have froze at some point
Back of camshaft---get a pressure tester and see where it's squirting out, just where did this truck come from?
it come from south Alabama
Alabama deep freeze--did it just have water?
im gonna go pick one up tomorrow. i really dont see any water coming down around any of the liners. it just seems to run off the cam
im not sure when i got it it had nothing in it. apparently the guy had just overhauled it. and ended up passing away. and it sat for about 12 years. i got it started up and ran it maybe 2 mins just to make sure it ran when it got towed home.then i ran into the coolant problem this morning. im betting he had just put water in it to test everything then ended up passing away and no one knew it was just water
Interesting--pull the rocker covers and look down from the top.
can i see any places coolant should be from there? i haven't worked on many cats. all Detroits stuff before this truck
also when i got the truck two of the freeze plugs we're spit out so thats why im thinking it for sure froze.
Oh boy, get a tester and pressurize while someone helps by looking for zipper leaks & soft plug leaks.
are there any plugs inside these motors that could allow the coolant to leak into that area at the back of the cam?. like i said ive never had a b model apart.
It's been awhile since I had one apart, but I don't remember any either, although there are soft plugs on the top side of head. That's why you need to remove rocker covers.
it appears you we're correct on the plugs in the head being the problem. i haven't fully pulled the rocker covers off just the top half but i can see the water pooled up there. do you happen to know the torque spec for the rocker arm stands. i think on of the plugs under the stand popped out as well.
Oil threads, these are head bolts through the rocker stands. First torque is 200 ft lbs starting with center bolt of rocker assembly, second torque of 330 +/- 15 ft lbs . If it has jakes the large mounting nuts are torqued 100 ft lbs the smaller 1/2 bolts are 48 ft lbs. Make sure that all mounting washers under main jake mounting studs are kept in order, should be stamped with a {B}. Those can be various thicknesses, but 99% of the time all the same thickness. And if it has jakes don't mess up the o-ring on oil feed dowel, jakes are stamped Front and Rear.
thank you so much for all your help i got it back together besides the oil pan but found out my compressor is cracked, seems like any leaks inside the motor were stopped.
ive got everything together now besides the pan on it and i filled it with coolant and water is dripping out of where the suction tube? would go not the pickup the other tube. could that be oil cooler?
or could it be the waterpump leaking down into that area?
Pressurize it.
Send engine serial. I thought all of those had torque to yield head bolts. On your water leak though you mean it is running down the oil pickup tube? Is it on outside of tube or inside of it? Very possible it pushed the seal out of pump when it froze
Not torque yield--throw-aways.
