426 cat transmisson rebuild

samk ยท 2011-06-03 18:48

this is probably a really stupid question but here goes. i am replacing the clutch discs and all seems to make sense but i am having a problem in 2 areas. first i have installed the inner and outer seals on the piston but am having trouble in getting it all the way into the bore [stops about 1/2 inch from bottom when the seal meets the cut in the bore. i understand that you just exert steady downward pressure, but i have already screwed one seal and was hoping that there was a trick to it. secondly is there a procedure for determining the correct shims that are needed for the rear cone bearing cup of the disc housing. thanks sam p.s.the tractor is a 426 cat with 7bc as the first 3 numbers of the serial

i finally put the assembled piston and seals in the fridge for an hour and then they went in without too much trouble so that problem is solved. i appear to have about the correct stack up clearance which i am assuming [from sis] is measured from the top of the end retainer plate to under the snap ring but when i turned it upside down i could move the plate and disc assembly up with my finger considerably more i have no idea if this is normal . the top plate has a step down where the snapring rest on. i hate to go ahead without knowing what is wrong i need help sam

it appears to have been successful. when i had the convertor out to be checked they found that the race was in bad shape and required replacement. this in turn put stress on the rear clutch pack cone bearing so it required replacing also. as for the rest once you had read a paragraph about 6 times and finally underestood what thaey were actually saying it went together pretty good. if i can be of any assistance just give a call. sam

Thanks for the update, this is one tranny no one wants to talk about and I'm sure everyone that has a cat will need to read up on whats ahead of them. I dug deeper into rev clutch pack today and found I had dial pin to turn loose and beat the crap out of piston causing it to wedge against drum, good reason for reverse to quit working. I also went by cat place to day and picked up D&A procedure that I think will help some. I hope to maybe get some pic's posted of piston/clutch/pin and plate for all the unlucky ones to see, I'm sure in time they will be grateful. Thanks, Rod
