426 dies

i got the hoe all welded back together on this new to me 426, installed some new cyls added new hyd fluid. changed the engine oil and went to do something and it died and wouldn't restart. i put a bottle of K100 fuel treatment in the fuel tank. cleaned the sedement bowl and replaced the fuel filter. bled the fuel system and it started right up. i have warmed it up and moved it around a coupe times since then. i went to use the machine today and it died. again. of course back behind the garage in the mud. i cracked the fuel inlet to the pump and pumped the hand primer and fuel is coming out. when i connect and disconect the little wires to the injection pump i hear a clicking noise wich i assume is the fuel selonoid. any ideas why it would die when i am trying to do stuff (other than murphys law) ? by the way it's an 87 with the perkins engine.........

The older ones seemed hard to get the air out of the system. It is also possible your transfer pump may be crapped out. Loosen it at the injector pump and have someone turn the engine over . Look for steady stream no air bubbles. If the stream is steady loosen the return on the pump and turn engine over to remove air. Then loosen injectors one at a time and bleed , if it starts let it run. While running go through and bleed the injectors one at a time till you see no air. These older ones can take a couple hours to bleed out. Keep a charger on the battery also. If push comes to shove use some starter fluid along to help it take off. if it does it again you may have a check ball issue.

The lift pump has a screen in it's top. The water seperator has a gasket within the head that needs swapped every filter change.

Thanks for the replies. The inside of the tank looks very rusty. This machine sat a lot for the last 10 years. When I did the filters 2 weeks ago the first time it shut down it was super cold out (-10*F). There was a hockey puck of ice in the suction sediment bowl and one in the filter. I will take the lift pump top off first thing tomorrow. The Previous owner must have had trouble with it in the past because there are a used set of pump gaskets and diaphragms in a box of parts he gave me with it. edit: it just seemed wierd that i had it going and drove it around for about an hour, let it warm up then all the sudden in the middle of a lift it just dies out of the blue like somebody hit a switch.

the screen looked perfect. i blew air backwards throught the suction line into the tandk and it seemed clear. disconected the line going into the injection pump and pumped the hand primer and filled a cashew container in only a few pumps. hooked the line back up and it started. i wish i had found the problem. i expect it will do this again in the middle of a busy intersection or something stupid.

Get it running again and start bleeding the injectors from one to four then four to one. These seemed to be a little pesky about bleeding. It is possible you are sucking air from somewhere. I do remember that these were the ones you did'nt run low on fuel period.

Yes indeed, they don't like to be run out of fuel or have dirty/contaminated fuel. How many useless hours have I spent trying to get some reluctant diesel motor going, in horrible surroundings, cursing everyone associated with equipment! My fuel supply is cherished and I never allow anyone to mess with it! Minus 10 is considered warm. roll your windows down sort of weather in Yellowknife! BUT...no fun trying to start diesels that are not going! My 426 drinks the best and has plenty of filter changes with frequent water separator drains! Baby loves me!
