Trying to remove swing cylinder to rebuild. Ive removed the gland but cant pull rod out. Everything Ive read or seen on youtube shows people just pulling out easy. Cylinder has been set so rod is as far out as it will go before gland removal. Looking for any suggestions. Unfortunately I have machine backed into a spot I cant really get anything big in behind to attach to try and pull out.
If you can't get the rod and gland out, wrap the whole works with an old bath towel or something similar to protect the rod from getting damaged and spraying fluid all over the place and "bump" the controls ever so slightly to push it out... Had to do this will a couple of cylinders before and everything went well, just make sure nobody is standing in front of it and use a big pan to catch all the fluid...Whatever you try don't use air to push it out , otherwise you have an uncontrolled missile on your hands....
It's always a good idea to remove the hose from the cylinder end to allow some air entry as you withdraw the rod. The piston seals still do their job & the suction will stop the rod from being pulled out. A swing cylinder also gives you the option of removing the valve in the back end of the cylinder - whichever has easiest access.
only 2 things come to mind...1. Need to let air in the blind side of the cylinder so the piston can come out. 2. The seal on the piston seal may have come apart and is wedged between the piston and the inner bore of the cylinder. For the first, loosen a hose as previously stated. for the second, you must manhandle it in order to get it out.
As Alrman said remove hose from base end of cylinder tube to let air in.
Ok thanks guys. Managed to get it out...but now I'm confused on the end here. I have a few parts diagrams and again the wonderful world of youtube and dont see this pin sticking out of any bolt anywhere on any rebuild. It wont come out and cant get it to go in far enough (spring tension) to get my socket on to remove. What is it and how do i remove it. I need to order a seal kit but want to make sure I know what I have. Dealer says there where various different cylinders used during this time? Thanks
That is the cushion stop pin, there is a spring and ball along with that pin. It keeps the swing tower from slamming against the stops when you swing it all the way to one side. When you remove the bolt watch for the ball to come rolling out. The repair seal kit is the same for the stabilizer and the crowd cylinders so there will be extra parts, like there may be two wiper seals and two buffer seals. Your gland may not use buffer seals at all.
Reattach the rod eye to the boom so you can get the nut off. Put the correct size socket on it and then put a 24 inch or bigger pipe wrench on it with a long pipe on the handle.
