580c power steering leak in steering column

Karl Maser ยท 2013-08-18 10:32

I have a pretty good PS leak at the base of my steering column, I beleive I will have to take the wheel off to get in the tube to see what is leaking ( perhaps a gasket). It seems there is a threaded nut that requires some specialized puller to remove the steering wheel, any one out there have experience with this? thanks, Karl

On my 580C it has a very rusted nut socket size 1 1/4. I think you just remove the nut and the steering wheel should come off. Ron

I have installed the seal on several machines in the machine, that seal has a rim made to it that taps down into the neck, it takes more time to get at it than the seal install on the shaft. Its not a bad job to do.

What Sheepfoot said, do it right on the machine.

Getting that steering wheel to pop loose from the shaft splines is typically a PITA. :Banghead

After you remove the nut you will see 2 holes in the center metal of the steering wheel. You will need 2 10-24 allen cap screws (for strength) and something to span the steering rod so that you can use the cap screws as a puller. After you take off the column sleeve (remove the BOTTOM C spring) and remove the short rod that couples the drive pin to the rod. Keep everything as clean as you can. Remove the dust cover and put a screwdriver in the drive pin hole and rotate back and forth. This should male the brass bushing pop up enough to remove it. You will have to PICK out the old seal. Replace with new seal etc. Be sure to put the seal in correctly. (not upside down)
