Does the machine pull good in reverse or does it seem to labor like it is trying to go forward also? Does the machine try to move forward while in neutral when you give it some throttle with the oil warmed up? Either of these 2 symtoms will be the forward clutch is not releasing due to a broken diaphram spring or a smoked and wared clutch pack. If everything is normal other than the noise it could be the bearings in the reverse planetary.

yes it pulls good.....will spin the tires in first gear....doesn't try to move in neutral...in 2 gear and higher on the hills around here it seems to bog down but i just figured it was 50 HP pullin' 8 tons around.....i rented a 580c about 12 years ago and it seems to have more power on the hills as than this one.....it has brand new rears on it to.....16.9 x 24's....the manual shows 7 different size tire for it from 14.9 x 24 to 17.5L x 24's.....are 16.9 x 24's to tall makin' gear ratio to high?.... thanks for the reply Goose:usa

The 580C wasnt a power house while roading by any means But it should pull hills good in third and for sure second without bogging down. If your tachometer works, put the trans in forth gear forward, brake on and engine full throttle and stall the converter and see what rpm it boggs down to. Should stay above 2000-2100 rpms with warm oil. If it stalls down to 1500 or so the converter is locked up and robbing your power.

ok i stuck in 4th held the brake and matted the throttle...it jump to 2060 rpm's and didn't drop.....had oil @ 130 degrees F....i have had the oil temp up to 160F with the loader full of wet dirt comin' up my drive in 2 gear.....is 160F to warm with the load?....Goose you think the converter is bad? thanks:usa

Your TC stall test sounds good. What is the rpms at full throttle no load?

  6. #6ghitch752009-06-14 14:36

2060rpm is as high as it gets( its a digital tach called TINY TACH )......what should the no load be?

  7. #7Goose2009-06-14 14:54

Full throttle no load should be 2270. I would cheat and bump it up to 2400 to compensate for normal converter wear. When you did the stall test did you have it in forward and stalling the machine against the brakes? If so you need to get you high idle up because right now it is at or below converter stall and the machine will be doggy and slow traveling.

i'll turn it up and report back....thanks Goose...

Goose i got it up to 2400rpm.....it pulls a lot better.....the throttle linkage at the pump was very sloppy....someone rigged it with a bolt that was way to small and would let it get to full rpm.....thanks so much for your help....:drinkup:drinkup:drinkup :usa

What would make a 580C only travel in reverse? Moves backwards, digs holes, no forward? Don't know much about Case machines. Any ideas? Possible easy fix or should I walk away from machine?

Hi there, I am new here as well but have the same problem, so would like to know the answer as well if possible. Thanks, Doug

The forward clutches are fried and the beveled washer is broken. Sounds like it's time to be rebuilt
