new to me 580c with unknown hours....blows blue when i first fire it up then the blue stops and blows a brown haze when i rev it up to dig with the hoe....when i have the loader full and pullin' a hill it blows then brown haze and very big black puffs about every 60 foot of the pull.....i checked the air filter and it was changed 01/08/09(was marked on the filter) it was clean....changed fuel filters...i added lucas fuel treatment to a fresh 20 gallons of fuel and it got a little better but still foggy....are the injectors crap?.....i have 2 6.5 turbos so diesels are not new to me.......it doesn't seem to be down on power i have moved around 60 tons of wet ditch mud(doin' the county's work cleanin' the ditch in front of my property)full loader pullin' 3% for a quarter mile up my drive with no problem....just don't want to burn a hole in a piston..... btw oil has been changed too...
I don't think you have a thing to worry about. For that matter, your doing good for a '79 model 580C Case. The blue smoke would be normal at start up on any older machine with some hours on it, the fact that it clears up to a brown smoke once warmed up means you still have an engine with good compression, that's a very good thing. And pulling a grade making brown smoke is good. The occasional puffs of black smoke is probably the governor sensing a load on the engine and throwing some more fuel to the engine, nothing unusual. You should be a happy guy with an engine that runs like this.
ATCOEQUIP is right. The blue smoke at start is normal and the older hoes always have a slight hazy look when they are running correctly. The puffs are probably the governor or a sticky nozzle. Run some power service in the fuel at about a triple dose and see if it clears up after a couple of tanks of fuel
ok guy's thanks for the replys.....i'll give her a good shot of power service......seems like i got one with a pretty good engine.....doing brakes tomorrow....then she'll stop good...thanks agian
