i have a new heavy vibration in my 1987 580 super E the first thing i checked were the torque convertor nuts, since i installed a rebuilt shuttle about a year ago (maybe 400 hours since) and figured they might have been loose, but theyre all still tight (guess i did remember to use loctite) the machine has 3800 total hrs next thing was the front hydro pump, bolts look tight and it doesnt wiggle with the machine one thing i found was the front motor mount had totally fallen apart, installed a new rubber, thinking i found my problem, and to my dismay, though the shudder isnt as bad as before, its still there it only does it between 1100rpm and about 2600rpm above or below that its not noticable my question is what can i check? oil looks good, no fuel leaks i can see...how would i go about narrowing down an injector maybe? i just joined n this place looks to be a great site! brad
That's funny Farmereinar...welcome to the forum. :usa
there may be a u joint on the pump drive shaft, and the drive belt could have a piece missing. I would go after that first, good luck, Smokey
Check the rear mounts also. About the only other thing that causes the E series to vibrate bad is a broken flexplate on the converter. When you replaced the shuttle/converter did you happen to align the flex plat with the special tool? Usually when the flex plate breaks you will hear a clicking sound in the bellhousing area also.
OMG! I messed that post up! I don't know whats causing your problem Farmereinar so couldn't offer advice. I intended to give you a light hearted welcome with the humor of the pic and ask "do you think your vibration is caused by that little roller sneakin' up behind ya?" Seems I didn't get the text finished before I hit submit and moved on. LoL...dummy me! :duh :lmao
I'm with Goose on this check the rear mounts too. They have a habit of hammering flat when the front mount gives out. If you had an injector problem I would think you'd have a miss to the engine. The torque converter out of alignment will cause a vibration, like Goose mentioned there is a tool to align torque converter to the plates, then you use a dial indicator to check the run-out after it is bolted to flywheel if memory serves right .011" is max runout. That said if it was out more than .025" you'd have an oil leak from the seal. I have seen torque converters that have not been balanced properly especially remans if the problem started after you put a reman torque converter in and you did align it that might also be the problem. Hope this helps you and wasn't too much to take in.
I just had this problem with my 580SE. Mine ended up being that bearing that is in the pilot shaft that holds the fan blade on. Just grab the fan and see if it moves from side to side. If so that part ran me $230.
hrmm thanks guys! finally had time last week to do some work to her, fixed the short in the front headlight citcuit, fixed a dash light that was out and put in those two rear motor mounts NO CHANGE IN VIBRATION!! though the motor doesnt shake n rattle im pretty sure i had the TC aligned perfect, though ill check runout, as its my next possible culprit i guess i also checked the fan, nothing there, no movement (does the belt need to be off for this test?)
No, You would know by just grabbing the fan and moving it side to side. You could remove the belt though and see if the bearing is shot in that tensioner. Those go bad as well.
I'm the first one up this morning, get to check under the tree . Anyway, if you are sure it's none of the above; this is a long shot . Your interpretation of a vibration and someone else's may be different. A delivery valve will sometimes cause a slight miss at higher engine speeds, it's rare but it's possible. Crack each injector line at the speed the vibration is most noticeable and see if one has little or no effect. Phil
