580SL smokes intermittently

My CASE 580SL with 6000 hrs.sometimes blowes a bit of black smoke for a second out of the exhaust when is is not loaded or changing RPM's like when i am going down the road or stationary using the backhoe.It runs like a top and does not use any oil.What could cause this?

    Yep 6,000 actually 6,200 hrs. what is causing puff of smoke?

    I wouldnt worry, ours did it to. Small puff of black smoke out of one cylinder once a while.

    Lots of diesels do that. just burping a little is all. That particular stroke of the piston had some changes made by the electronics prolly in mid stroke or something is about all i figure for those times.
