Are the foot and hand throttle the same? Check the throttle linkage at the injection pump and disconnect the cable and check the travel of the foot and hand throttle.

Coy yes the foot and the hand throttle are the same and the hand throttle appears to have move area for more movement before it stops and i will disconnect the cable and check that out tomarow Thanks for your input

Yes Stan, BEFORE YOU UNHOOK THE LINKAGE.. Get a good base line rpm..w the throttle hooked up.. Just warm it up a little, then mash the pedal to the floor.. record the tach reading.. NOW UNHOOK THE LINKAGE.. & start it up.. grab the throttle, right there at the injection pump and w your hand, rev it till it hits the stop screw and take an rpm reading.. If the 2 readings match, then it’s a simple stop screw adjustment on the pump.. The problem I have with that method is.. MORE THAN LIKELY if your using the engine tach.. ITS OFF AND NOT RELIABLE.!!

Thank you thepumpguysc i was just getting ready to head to the barn and disconnect the linkage ill do what you said tomorrow after i get home from work and after the machine has warmed up Thanks again for your input

Any chance your fuel filters are plugged/frozen? Have you replaced them lately?

It’s the same advice you got from Coy.. just in a different order..

I just tried what you said to try thepumpguy with throttle hooked up with a free spinning engine i get 1900 with the foot throttle i unhooked the linkage and grabbed the linkage connection point on the injection pump and i could run engine up to 2100 and it wasn't at the throttle stop yet i don't like to rev a free spinning engine in fear of breaking something so im guess it a adjustment some place with the throttle linkage but i do know the governor was fighting me as i was trying to rev up the engine at the injection pump

Can you get the pump # off the pump.?? Or even a pic & post it?? Depending on the engine conditions, there may be a data tag on the engine.?? THAT WILL tell u the appropriate rpm..

What are you guys using for a tach that would be accurate? I have a '04 580SM and on the tach in the cab, my RPM is on the low side according to what the service manual says. 650 idle and 2100ish full - no load is what I read and for the stall tests I'm supposed to have 900 - 1100 and 2350 - 2500. Do you have the 4T-390 engine in yours Stanley the dog ?

Problem is usually at foot pedal on these M. Make sure you get full travel from your foot pedal. check on the firewall, removing rubbermat behind engine helps have more room to work but not necessary!

Does it have a stopper bolt under the pedal.?? U can get a hand held tach off the web.. only thing I don’t like about them is the reflective tape they supply.. the glue won’t hold on any painted surface.! I carry a small bottle of super glue in the pouch w mine.. A drop on the harmonic balancer & wait a minute and your good to go.. Like I said earlier.. the engine tach’s are NOT accurate.!!! 2100 sounds like an Indy Car when your standing next to it.!! Lol THANK YOU DREW for the specs.. If u have the 4-390.?? The engine data tag will b riveted to the front timing cover.. before u get to the front of the engine.. it’s usually red in color. (driver side) U should WRITE DOWN all the info on that tag (take a pic) you’ll need that info for any engine parts you’ may need in the future.!!!

It has a Case 445/M2 engine in it. 207 cubic inch. The tractor series would determine exactly which Tier engine it has. There are slight differences in the rpm settings in the different ones.

Diesels are meant to be run at high idle, as long as the governor is working correctly you don't need to worry about running the engine at high revs without load for a while.

My 580k tach reads about 500 rpm high ,over the years it started to just creep up ,hopefully some day I’ll figure out how to fix it.

I checked today and there is a tag with most of the specs on the timing cover with low idle at 950 and high idle at 2200 I played with the foot pedal today and gained some more RPMs now its just shy of 2200 I'm calling that good but did find a 3/16 bolt in the adjustment clevis pin so I know someone's been in there before but its still not hitting the stop on the pump but I'm calling it good till I get a hand held tach owners manual said 2250-2350 for high idle with no load but like I said ill get a hand held tach before I adjust any thing more and there is not a stop bolt under the foot throttle and ill probably adjust to data plate on timing cover not owners manual I thank you all for the good helpful information

Thanks for the update.. We’re happy that your happy.. Let us know how it works out when you get a hh tach.. eBay/Amazon have herds of them cheap.. I did a comparison between a 300.00 tach vs an eBay 25.00 tach.. BOTH were the same.!! But the obvious was in the construction.. The 300.00 tach was made of hi grade steel and aluminum..& would shoot a laser line 10+ feet.. The 25.00 was ALL plastic & u had to be pretty close to the reflective tape to take a reading.. But other than that, the readings were right on.!! & THATS WHAT MATTERS.

Thanks thepumpguysc for that tidbit of information ill be sure to check that out

  18. #18Stanley the dog2021-03-26 19:25

Im pretty sure i found the problem im thinking it was a bad throttle cable there was a oil leak and oil got into the throttle cable assembly making it gummy and sticky i now how a high idle according to the tach of 2250 and that is under a load of 3rd gear driving down the road but im still taking your suggestion pumpguy i have a hand held tach on order Thanks to you all

  19. #19thepumpguysc2021-03-26 21:22

Look around the engine or the pump data tag.. THAT will give u the hi idle NO LOAD RPM.. Then subtract 10% for full load rpm.

  20. #20Stanley the dog2021-03-27 16:59

Ill check all that as soon as i get a hand held tach and thats for that information pumpguy
