I've never been into 6.0s before but I got one. 2006, very stock, 200,000 miles. Truck is heavy, F350 4wd, 4 door, 9 foot service body, heavy rack, etc. On acceleration from a dead stop you can see a little black smoke in the mirror, nothing much. Same thing with a cold start. On an older truck I would not care, but most of the HEUI Fords I have seen run completely clear all the time, this one shoots a little smoke if the boost is not up. Mostly seems to happen on an uphill stop sign, rear ratio and first gear seems a little tall. Otherwise seems to run just fine. Wondering if this is normal behavior, or maybe it needs a set of nozzles or something?
I think it might be normal for a 2006. I know maintenance is important on the 6.0 litres. My mechanic friend who's a Ford diesel tech had a 6.0 litre that was stolen unfortunately. It was chipped and had black smoke if he stomped on it. He didn't drive crazy though and with normal driving got better mileage than stock with no smoke.
At 200k new injectors is a good idea. Do a compression check along with them. Smoke with low boost, check the after cooler and piping for leaks.
Turbo might be stuck? Is it an automatic? With proper maintenance injectors last 300k plus. Doubt fuel is the issue but have you been changing both fuel filters at 10k How long since you changed the air filter? Compression can be checked with a computer, no need for a manual compression check and we can also do it with an automatic transmission
I find it hard to believe that it lasted 200k without changing any injectors.
I just got it, this is the shakedown to see what needs repaired. These go cheap enough that the plan is, even if it needs total rework of the engine it is still worth it.
If you change both fuel filters every 10k and never run out of fuel over 300k is easy to obtain, the 6.0 has a 95 gph lift pump and keeps the fuel rather clean. Id like to know what your mechanic says most of them replace parts and don't fix it.
Got one that was doing the same thing boost leaked fixed it that thing was feeling pretty under powered before that and quite a bit of lag I really like my 6.os they were all supper cheap yea they need work but once you do some basic stuff they have been reliable
Where can we get one of those computers and how much do they cost?
Ford ids at the dealer is the good one and irc you can only get it working at a dealer. You can have the dealer run a power balance and cyl contribution test and knock out compression and injectors in about 10 minutes and $150 I believe autoenguinty does it but not the compensated test so not as good as Ford's. It cost a decent amount and does many makes. EI01 Enhanced Ford-family Expansion Enhanced Ford-family Interface Expansion, Ford IDS, Ford VCM, Ford VCM II, Ford. Lincoln, Mercury, Saleen, Panoz, Aston Martin www.autoenginuity.com Forscan has one as well but irc uncompensated, but hey the program is nearly free and works on many Ford's Download FORScan If you want to test your compression, cac system, and injectors in one go at home power brake the truck to 15 psi, if there is a problem you will not make it there.
Check the CAC boots, hands on check, they get pretty oily and we've seen em crack pretty good but look ok just sitting there cold engine off. Since it's new to you probably a good idea to pull the EGR valve and clean it plus look into the intake. If there's a chance it sat for a while I'd pull the turbo and clean the VGT up, they do love to stick . Do fuel filters and put the pressure regulator spring upgrade in too.
You also said engine is stock, a 06 with commenized heads has very little to no chance of a head gasket failure if you don't tune it so there's not much that needs to be done except EGR delete/bulletproof EGR Ficm repair ultimate ficm 00 positive battery cables with eyes, marine post to eye conversion High output alternator from ficm repair Blue spring kit, probably already there Don't go under 1/4 tank Elc coolant And the truck is good for a long time
