613b elevator flight wear

R W Merrick · 2016-02-24 13:12

How do determine how far worn down my flights are? I thought there would be a spec like there is for undercarriage but i can't seam to find it. Maybe someone knows how wide a new flight is. Thanks.

This should be what you're looking for ............ The text to go with it is as follows: - "An elevator flight is worn out when the plate is worn to the weld shown in the upper illustration. If repairs are not made and the weld begins to wear, it will become weak. In time, the channel and the plate will move apart. As a result, the flight will be completely destroyed by dirt forced between the plate and the channel." "Worn flights are rebuildable. A 6.35 mm × 50.8 mm (.250" × 2.00") wear strip can be cut to length from structural steel stock that has a minimum yield strength of 620 MPa (90,000 psi) and a minimum tensile strength of 720 MPa (100,000 psi). The strip is then welded to the flight as shown in the lower illustration."

As I recall CAT sells the end plates as a wear part, the piece with the holes in it to bolt to the chain. We bought one and had a local fab shop whip out a full set for about half each, then set up a jig to keep the spacing and alignment close to OEM. YMMV

grouser bar works great. have rebuilt hundreds of flights with this and you can get various profiles and sizes Mark

Thank you all for the quick replies. Grouser bar is what i had planned to use to build them up. I didn't know what size to use because i don't know how wide they were to start with. They are down to the weld now. I was thinking to extend them about an inch.

That CAT picture Nige put up, it says 1/4" X2" strip and it looks like they split the difference so about an inch looks right to me. As I recall the elevator stops are shimmed so the flights clear the bowl cutting edge?

I used D4 grouser bar as mentioned butt welded to the flight and made my own end caps from 1/2" plow steel.
