740EJ truck tranny oil cooler problem

dugs67 ยท 2014-06-09 12:50

I would like to ask if anyone out there running these trucks 2005 model may behaving cooler issues. Since the day these were purchased, we have had with no waring coolers fail taking out the tranny. The Finning dealer for Cat says we should drain coolant when parked however how do you control this while failure happens during operation in the summer. Since we bought a fleet of these thru finning we have no idea what historically the previous ower did so the fact about draining fluid really not applicatable. It seems with trucks all failing with less than 5000 hrs some only 3000 hours there is a factory defect. Looking at the cost to fix to keep these trucks running only one wnning here is the dealer Each tranny cost $50K to rebuild plus 2 months loss production. So with us currently into a production job and the third year battling this problem no reconition from CAT or the dealer regarding the problem we are searching for others that may, surely this can not be the only trucks out of thier lineup with issues???? Appreciate feed back on these trucks Thanx

Doesn't make any sense to me, if you had coolant freezing up I would think you would have problems with radiators and cylinder heads, etc. more likely than only the trans cooler. Time to hire a lawyer and a couple expert witnesses. You can't beat Finning, let alone CAT, but maybe if you're a big enough nuisance they'll pony up and get this taken care of for you. But then what do I know? Wait until the CAT guys comment :drinkup

740EJ tranny cooler problems no issues of coolant freezing. I think the only way to get anything reconized is by more issues out there than these 6 units. I'm sure has to be someone out there experincing Finning by passing the issue a just wrried about collecting on th repair. If we did an audit of down time and cost to run per hour with these trucks be astonomical

So you have 6 units. How many have had failures and how many times ?

We've been looking after a fleet of six 740s since 2006 and haven't seen any cooler failures. Running Cat TDTO30 in the tranny and Cat ELC in the cooling system. Everything gets serviced by the book with SOS on both the oil and coolant.

We've got 2 threads on the go here .............. always something to confuse people ........... On the other thread I asked ........ "What brand & viscosity of oil are you using in the tranny, and what brand/type of coolant..? Do you carry out an oil analysis programme..? I've seen rashes of cooler failures attributable directly to the oil or coolant being used." OP responded .............. "We are running CAT oil and recommended anti freeze." Sorry - not enough info in either case. Exactly WHICH Cat oil are you using and what viscosity..? Specifically what Cat coolant are you using (Cat don't sell "antifreeze") You don't say whether you are using an oil analysis programme. Oil analysis might just pick up the first signs of the coolant additives in the power train oil and save you from having a complete transmission failure. I'd also be interested to hear how many total failures you've had and specifically if there have been any repeat failures on any of the 6 trucks. Let's have some decent info. How many trucks did you buy..? Were they all used..? If yes, how many hours on each at the time of purchase..? No prior maintenance information from the original owners at all..? .............for each and every failure, we need. Truck Serial Number Truck Hours at Failure Transmission Hours (if different to truck hours) Question to the ADT experts here. Does the Ejector Truck have anything in the power train that sets it apart from a standard 740..? I'm too lazy to look.

740EJ trucks tranny cooler issues Tranny oil used TDTO/30 I will say " this is not a oil issue its a oil cooler failure." We use extended life pre mixed anti freeze recommended by Cat. Trucks bought from Finning no previous repair issues with serial numbers range from B1R00271 to the oldest at ending in 328. To my knowledge according to the Finning mechanics there were a batch of trucks came out that were just pure problematic. years of the trucks are 2005 lowest houred truck 2500hrs to 3500 hrs when purchased all purchased as a fleet from Finning. To date the hourly cost for repairs not counting down time has been $60 per hour, I don't think Cat promotes this with their sales brochure. For the simplest research to find out if other have had the same similar truck issues is what we are searching. Thanx Specifically what Cat coolant are you using (Cat don't sell "antifreeze") You don't say whether you are using an oil analysis programme. Oil analysis might just pick up the first signs of the coolant additives in the power train oil and save you from having a complete transmission failure. 4 transmissions replaced all below 3500 hours, maybe on to the 5th flushing transmission on another unit to hopefully save. The trannies have not failed its the cooler failing taking out the tranny clutches We have been running everything by the book oil sampling but when these fail while truck is operation no telling failure until tranny slips when that happens clutches are toast

Loads of info there, all of it good ......... I was insistent about the oil and coolant simply so that they could be eliminated from the diagnostic equation. As I said before I've seen rashes of cooler failures on fleets before that were attributable to the oil being used (brand rather than specification). How many trucks do you have in total..? Have you had a repeat cooler failure on any truck..? Could you possibly find out from the previous owners what powertrain oil they used..? A clutch failure is a transmission failure, it's just a "soft" failure as opposed to a bearing/shaft/gear failure which would be a hard failure and cost megabucks. Is it always the same clutch that fails..? I'll have to check the clutch material to see if it's F37 or Rayflex. One of the two (I need to refresh the memory banks which one) doesn't like glycol at all. Can you go back and look at your oil sample history and post the results for sodium & potassium. Even if oil analysis has been giving you "No Action Required" maybe there is something that we can find that might help to spot the problem early. I think it will be too late if the oil tests positive for water or glycol. I have a similar issue currently and am picking it up even before the oil lab raises the alarm by "lowering the bar" regarding the limits on Na & K.

Nothing that I can see or have heard of to suggest this is a major problem so it is very unfortunate what has happened to you. Looking into my crystal ball I can see that Cat was questioned about this cooler issue after your 2nd failure approx 13 months ago and they had no issues being reported at that time of any flaws or problems with the coolers. Cat's response was to just keep SIMs lines (this is a dealer thing and has nothing to do with you) being entered by the dealer after each failure so Cat can track and monitor if there is a problem. The unfortunate thing is after warranty if parts fail it's hard for Cat to track why. If it's a warranty failure Cat needs info on what happened but if its after warranty its harder to track as most dealers don't continue to fill out SIMs lines which help Cat track problems and is required for warranty claims. Needless to say I hope you have replaced ALL trans coolers on EVERY 740 in your fleet to try and save time and money in the long run ??

Anyone know where I could find a facility that could test an oil cooler for leakage. Like to run a -30 to +30 test both extreems Cat wantsto know the results??? On aoter note see to be now having failure of the crown bolts front diffs falling out, two failed exact hours not good, seems no lock tight have to go thru each truck now and morintor or replace bolts.

740 Cat tranny failures Seems another truck tranny failure hours on truck less than 5000hrs. Again another truck goes down with 4th / 5th clutch pack failing. We completed a oil sample and the report came back glycol contaminated change oil change cooler fix the leak. Now this is the 4th failure from trannies failing with trucks having less than 5000 hours. CAT is still sitting back saying nothing yet the dealer is changing out the oil cooler each time the tranny failure. Seems this last repair is about the 3 low hour tranny failed due to glycol from the oil cooler. If anyone else is having trouble with these units we like to hear from you.
