773g fuel pump

2frankh ยท 2014-12-23 22:07

Can't keep my bobcat running. Priming it will let it start but it dies after a couple of minutes. Will not start again unless I prime it again. Think it may be the fuel pump. Is there more than one pump? Any suggestions on other possible causes?:Banghead Picking up a fuel pump tomorrow just in case. Also, is there any "tricks" on replacing the drive belt? Help is much appreciated. Happy holidays

Does it suck the primer bulb flat when it dies? If not, good possibility it's the lift pump, especially if pumping the primer bulb makes it run. Tricks for the drive belt? I think I recall the tensioner on a 773G requires a good long prybar and holding your mouth right.

It doesn't suck the bulb flat. It stays full of fuel. Where is the lift pump located? Any tricks to installing it? Thanks

Follow the fuel line. Line leaves primer bulb and goes to the filter. Leaves the filter and goes to the lift pump. No problem to change lift pump.

There is a small screen at the suction hose into the fuel thank , remove the suction hose in the tank , clean the screen and your machine will run as new

Have replaced the tube and screen already. Talked to bobcat today when I got a fuel pump. He said getting tension back on the drive belt can be tricky. If I let go of the tensioner doesn't that happen automatically, or do I need to do something else?

the tensioner is spring loaded. remove the cover loosen the bolt that holds the tensioner to the flywheel housing you should see a small sheetmetal pointer between the pulley and the mount, you want that pointer to (eventually) be at approx the 3 o'clock position using a long (36" or more) prybar between the top of the idler mount and the flywheel housing, lever the mount DOWN, the spring will wind itself and keep tension on the belt tighten the pinch bolt. if the tensioner will not "wind up" you may have to give the pulley a couple whacks with a hammer. it's sort a PITA to get both hands in there, be careful of the positive battery post/cable when you're in there with tools. :drinkup

Willie, Does the lift pump on the 773G have the strainer in the top with the small center bolt that holds the cover on it? Have had those get plugged on some small diesels.

Thanks for all the help. Raining here the last 3 days going to get it done on Friday I hope. I removed the battery to make working in there easier. Still not much room.

New belts and a new pump. Back in business. Not sure if I've got enough tension on the drive belt though. Any way to check this?

The tensioner has a small pointer on a metal disk on the backside of the tensioner pulley. If there's no tension on the pulley the pointer will be in the 12 o'clock position. When you put tension on the pulley it moves the pointer. You need to have the pointer between 2 and 3 o'clock. If the pointer is between 12:00 to 2:00, it's too loose.
