80′ Cat 951B 69H trans/convertor seems to be bogging engine

Thanks for letting me join HEF. Hey to all the great members. Been on here alot over last few weeks looking to see if anyone else had same issue. And didnt see alot info on issue loader is having. Except for a guy had a 941 with same isse with rebuilt trans and convertor but he never posted if he got it fixed.. Have 1980 951B 68H56xx kinda low hour 3700 machine i purchased to do some work around my place. Supposed to be original hrs but of course not 100% sure, Seems to be tight machine.?? Just purchased a few months ago so dont know much about it other than engine overheating and owner give up on it. Previous owner done head gasket, water pump thermostat. I purchased loader kinda knowing what heating issue was after checking radiator while running with IR gun s i pulled radiator and all but 10 or so tubes inside were stopped up from rust scale and radiator stop leak. Will post pics later of that mess. Got tubes cleaned / rodded out and fixed heating issue and had bad fuel from sitting past 5-6 yrs. Drained fuel tank, lines and new filter and water separator. Also put new injectors and adjusted int/exh valves. All Oil & filters using Cat filters and mobiletrans TDTO HD 30w oil changed in trans and checked screens, bevel gear, and hydraulics. Oil was still clean and no metal or fibers in none of the screens or filters. Now here is the issue loader has. Engine seems to be running clean and sounds good. But when in its placed into 1st gear i can hear it already putting load on engine even moving on flat hard ground. Yes i know you thinking maybe engine isnt at full power. But this is the issue even when loader is in gear going down a slope. Move shifter to neutral while free rolling and loader picks up speed free rolling and load is taken off engine. While loader is still free rolling and full throttle in neutral about speed it would be in 1st gear and soon as i go into 1st it puts load on engine. Not alot but its about what it should be going up a slope. Does the same in reverse also. When trying to dig it lugs engine way down unless i move shifter to neutral. I have run equipment for 30 yrs and operated alot of powershift cat loaders/dozers for years and still do 941 955 D5 D6 D8 ect and never seen 1 do this. All temps run run normal and all gears forward / reverse work as they should. And it will spin tracks until it lugs engine rpm's down. Any advice what to check or had a machine with same issue i would appreciate any knowledge. I will try to help anyone i can too. Steve Z

I had to post pics of what rust and stop leak will do to you radiator. Loader water temp would just keep climbing when doing anything with machine just tracking and would only cool down a few degrees after idling for 15 min or so.

Welcome aboard ZZ sounds like your going down the right road. I would guess a seller with issues and frustration with an old machine is easy to bargain with.

those loaders don't like the brakes to tight you should have about a half of pedal travel before you feel the pedal getting tight

    Can't be a B series if it's 1980.

Pull the side cover off throttle linkage side, disconnect linkage and make sure you have nothing interfering with lever from cab handle on pump. Maybe your not getting full throw.

If it's really a 69H it can be. Bob

Caterpillar dealer shows it was a 1980 951B by serial number 69H5683. But these B and C seems to be iffy.

I adjusted both steering brake to 3 full turns out from tight. Seems to be half pedal. I did see post about bleeding pump by pumping bleeder pump and loosen each injector line at injector pump and turn engine over to get all air out. dirty/dark fuel came out of couple and now not running clean. Has abit of smoke at idle and high idle. Injecting pump looks to need of flushing and cleaning.

Just to clear up a few points, the 951B to 951C change came in at 69H1869 in 1972, the 951C engine change came in at Serial No 2520 from the 330C to the 3304 in 1973. tctractors.
