got a cat 931b 25y series track loader left brake has nothing left to it so I opened it up to look at it --very greasy and extremely dirty also--is this normal? looks like brake lining is mostly gone-- I have no idea how to get it out without tearing everything apart and I am not in a shop but in the middle of the woods also is the top adjusting bolt a left thread to take up slack or is it reverse thread so you are actually backing rod out? any hotlines anyone recommends for brake bands and other parts--local cat dealer wants my first born for the band and they also want the old one to refurbish or it is more any advice would great parky123--Ontario,canada
Locate the source of the leaking oil and correct. Remove the clutch, wash off inspect and repair if necessary then reinstall with relined band. Fuel and hyd tank mounting bolts need to be loosened to let tanks swing outward a bit. Later Bob
931b cat steering brake that's the thing-- how do you get these things out? I know the brake bad is shot-- how do you remove? parky 123
Remove the brake linkage and steering valves, then the big covers. Disconnect the internal linkage and remove it. Then take out the flange bolts and then lift the clutches out with a come along or other lifting devise. Later Bob
I got the covers off and the linkage is disconnected is it as simple as taking out the four bolts at the bottom which appear to hold the brake linkage to the chassis? With this removed, what flange bolts are you referring to? I am not at the machine and all I have is a pfd diagram of a brake assembly from a google site stumbled upon does the clutch have to come out to get the brake out?
Take the cam bracket (four bolts) out and the linkage. Then the flange bolts hold the clutch to the flange on the bevel gear shaft and the flange on the final drive pinion. Later Bob
thanks-- you live any where near Kingston or napanee?
Bob/Ont, sounds by design they went to a Allis style clutch pack for install/remove. Just replaced a brake band on a Allis 7G a year or so back, came apart similarly, use the brake band as the lifting mechanism for pulling clutch pack.

931b 25y series steering brake bob,ont-- which flange bolts are you referring to?
Yes, then the clutch will slide into the drum a bit and can be lifted up. There are 4 bolts holding the brake anchor to the bottom of the case down the front. The yoke has a pivot ball on the bottom that sits in a bushing. Later Bob
bob,ont-- how do you rotate the clutch/brake assembly to get at bottom flange bolts?-- the tracks and transmission will stop it from rotating
You can use a jack and force the track around to turn it. Later Bob
Hello parky123, you may have to jack up the side to get the track to turn, and there is a plug on the outside that you can remove to insert your socket. After all the bolts are out a small hoist can help to lift out the brake/clutch. There is an adjustment bolt on the yoke, if i were you i would not remove it, the unit will come out with it on. the way i did mine was the leave 2 bolts on untill i had a good strap under and around the brake, with the come along holding it before removeing the last 2 bolts, go slow and you may have to move it around a bil but it will come out, the brake drum will slide off the clutch and then you can get a good look at the brake band. Good luck, Sam.
hi wosama931b I sound like an idiot but I just can't see how that can all come out in one piece the yoke has to come off and the flange to the left is quite a bit larger in circumference-- this is turning into a larger job then I wanted do you know what the actual depth of the brake material should be ie 1/4".7/32 or something like that?
Around 1/4". Is the linkage all together and can you make the band tighten up on the drum? Band, drum, clutch and yoke all come out as ine piece. Later Bob
