955h torque converter overheating

Andrew_DCNC · 2022-11-29 18:44

I recently purchased a 955h loader, (serial#60a6343). It had been sitting for several years before I got it. Was using it for the first time over the weekend clearing trees and it operated fine for several hours until I noticed there was a fire under the floor panels. Extinguished the fire with no damage, but checked the converter oil temp gauge and saw that it was all the way to the right on hot. Figured the fire was caused by hot torque converter. There are 2 dipsticks in the floorboard but I don’t know what they are for, though I assume one is for the transmission and I have no clue about the other. My questions are… What causes the torque converter to get too hot? Is there a converter oil cooler? What are the 2 dipsticks in the floorboard? (One is under the seat and the other is just in front of/beside the right pedal) Where are the filters located for these 2 dipsticks, and are they the same type filter? I’m new to CAT equipment as this is the first CAT I’ve had. It is just for farm use.

You might consider getting an operator/maintenance manual for the machine in question

1 is for transmission and 2nd is for case, there are 2 filter's pretty sure they are not the same, don't quote me on this iam pretty sure on top of the case there look's to be a tower with a line going to the case thats your case filter not sure where trans filter is on a 60a,if the converter got hot and caused fire it may need new seal and maybe more, sorry for the grim news, get that manual or look online with ser. number

For your Serial Number 60A6343 the manuals are the following Caterpillar Publication Numbers:- Operation & Maintenance - 00033504 Parts - UE034920 You might find them on eBay but they can also be downloaded from Cat. The O&M is $52, the Parts Manual is $124. Here's what appears to be an original 1960s service manual on eBay - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/32393694...MI3Omn-rbW-wIVpu_tCh1p6AboEAQYAyABEgJrA_D_BwE

a plugged converter cooler will cause excessive heat, there are 2 types water cooled connected to oil cooler on the side of motor and 1 that is next too radiator, the newer machine's like the k's and l's have the rad type.my machine is a 955 85j and still has the water cooled which i perfer to have less problems and that rad. mound is lets say is way up there over a grand i believe ,the area under floorboard prolly has not been cleaned in years and all the oil and grease under the there can be a fire hazard,a good clean out would be in order and maybe drop the lower guard or pan, by the way the manual from u.k. say's no u.s. postal i thought i would throw that out there ,i know it is for ref. only not trying too hammer nige he prolly did not see that the fine print on the ad. fest
