Hi 85j07056. My machine sometimes will not move forward when placed in first gear forward. If i then put it in second gear it goes then i put it in first and it runs good. Sometimes i have to put it in third then second then first. All reverse gears work fine. I just changed hoses and fluids and filters. can someone please provide some direction. Have not gone through the linkages but have been reading the book. Thanks Gretch
Check your linkage also the bushings where the shifter shaft comes out of the case get wore 1st 2nd and 3rd are the same in forward and reverse so i you have a problem it would be in the forward clutch. does it go into neutral ok. From what you said I would suspect linkage
Dave. Thank you for your time and opinion! That makes sense as it is an old machine. I will have to check but neutral seems to be a bit tough! The book explains the method but it is a bit confusing. If I understand you should there be a bigger problem it would also show up in the reverse 1, 2, and third gears. Thanks again that is where I start! Gretchen
If you are having a tough time getting it in neutral then linkage and bushings are the problem most likely. pull the floor boards and look for rocking motion in the shafts coming out of trans. It a booger of a job to replace one of them have to remove valve body and because its in a 955 it is tight to get in there
There is a pivot point in the linkage that is on the right rear of the transmission. The pivot doesn't have a grease fitting and gets bound up, mine was. Take it apart and grease it up The other point which has a grease fitting is the one directly below the shift lever
Thank you... I greased the fitting right below but have not noticed the pivot point on the rear. Will look for it and proceed. Will let you guys know what i find. Poor weather now so it will be a day or so... Gretch..........
Might want to use something like dry graphite rather than grease so it won't attract dirt. Shop that did my steering clutches (dry) suggested it for the ball pivots on the steering clutch arms. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Blaster-5-5-oz-Industrial-Graphite-Dry-Lubricant-8-GS/202597501
