I think it does. They were installed when they went to the sleeve metering fuel system. Look for a square filter with a glass housing and a drain tap on it. Look at rear of the engine under the side cover. Later Bob

As always, nothing's quite that simple. The model letter changed from 955K to 955L from machine Serial Number 85J04672 upwards, so your loader is obviously a higher S/N than 4672. However from what I can see the 3304 engine didn't get installed in that machine until 85J06247. I reckon that the S/N range 85J1-6246 is/was a D300-range engine because the parts system lists the engine S/N as being the same as the machine S/N, typical for that engine model. So I guess the next question is, what's your exact S/N..? PM me if you don't want to post it here.

I have an 85J machine with a D330. The fuel/water seperator is under the rear cover. It's just a valve adjacent to an identical looking valve that runs to the transfer pump. The primary fuel filter is right next to the transfer pump.

I found a fuel filter toward front of engine on right side. Under the filter is a small cup, maybe that's the glass housing it's painted over. tomorrow I will check out your advise. if time permits i will post pic. thanks for your help.. jem1960

If you found a small cup painted over it is likely the sediment bowl for the compact fuel system. They had a metal bowl held on by a bail(wire loop). It is located on the bottom of the fuel pump drive housing next to the fuel transfer pump. Loosen the nut under the bowl clean it out and wash the screen. The sediment bowl was replaced with the water separator when they went to the sleeve metering pump. Later Bob

In addition to Bob's post, when you get the metal bowl off, the filter (brass) will just unscrew.

Thanks Bob, i found sediment bowl, removed it and found a small filter, it was not screwed on; brass bolt was loose, it was apparent filter was never changed it was cystalized already. Now on trying to fine said filter, i guess i'll have to go to cat to buy one. thanks for your advise. jem1960

Grandpa, filter was unscrewed. does this mean my 955l does not have a fuel/ water seperator ?

Jem, as Bob says the 955L will either have a sediment bowl like the one you have, or if it's a newer 3304 engine with a sleeve-metering type of fuel injection pump then it will have a full-on water separator installed. Yours is obviously the former type. Count your lucky stars - sleeve metering injection pumps do NOT like dirty fuel or fuel with even a single drop of water in it. You never mentioned your Serial Number in the OP, just the prefix. You don't have to give the full S/N here but please confirm if it's in the range 85J4672-6246, 4671 or lower, or higher than 6247. As you were asking, the small filter in the glass bowl is a 5S-7645 Element As, the gasket for the bowl is a 9H-2770. Less than $10 the pair from your local friendy Cat dealer.

No Jem1960, your machine doesn't have the glass fuel separator. Under your fuel tank there should be two shutoff valve's. One valve comes from the tank, thru one valve and on to the engine. The other valve under your tank is a drain valve for either draining the fuel out of the tank or draining a little bit into a jar to check fuel quality . The little filter inside the sediment bowl that Bob/ont was referring too either rattled loose from years of vibration or rusted up from years of water trapped in the bowl. Nige gave up the part no. and prices which are very reasonable... he's (nige) a talented bloke, but don't say I said so.
