962G parking brake

mekon ยท 2011-08-26 20:50

The service brakes work fine on our 962 but the parking brake will not hold on even the slightest grade.Does anybody know if they are adjustable?I skimmed through the operators manual but found no reference.

The parking brake is a drum on the drive shaft on the front shaft in the articulation hitch. It is a drum with shoes, just like a car but it has a canister that applies the brake. The canister is hydraulically released and spring applied. See if the rod on the canister is moving when the park brake is applied and released. If it is moving then the shoes could be worn. They can be adjusted through a small hole in the frame by turning the star wheel. Same as you would a car. If the rod is not moving then maybe the cable broke or came undone on the control valve and the operator drove through the brakes. Normally the brake shoes are worn out. What is the serial prefix of the machine?

Thanks for the reply.Late Monday afternoon will be the soonest I can take a look at it and get a serial prefix. The machine is subject to having a few different cowboys in the pilots seat at times,so it is possible the brake was run out.The machine also spends >50% of its working time in manure pits. The unfriendly environment of liquid/sand/organic just may have worn the shoes out.

With a prefix i can see exactly what the machines configuration is. There are over a dozen 962G's all possibley having small differences. Some have the parking drum on the front shaft of the trans and debris in the trans belly pan fills up and gets in the drum.

I finally had 30 seconds to look under the machine and grab the serial. The pre is 5AS.I see the drum you refered to.Thursday should be a day in the yard so Ill get her in the shop and see whats going on.Thanks a bunch Lee.

The brake is mounted on the front output of the transmission. If the actuator is working and is moving lever #4 then move the drum so hole #2 lines up with the star wheel #1. Turn the star wheel so the shoes touch the drum so it cannot be turned by hand then back it off 6 clicks. The park brake should hold the machine in 3rd gear (manual not auto) forward at high idle.

Thank you Lee.you are a huge source of information.

The brake is hydraulicly released and spring applied, we have seen these springs break before and therefore even though the arm moves the tension of the spring is not enough to hold the macine from moving

I have a 916, 2xb00825, and also have parking brake problems. My drum is on the rear shaft. Is the design bascially the same ? Some parts are missing on mine but it sure would be nice to have it fixed.

I will look up parts for 916 2XB00825

Thanks. I bought the loader used and did not receive any manuals with it. It certainly has been a learning experience. I found a CD version of the OMM but so far have not found a Parts manual.

Good news for me, Lee ! Found a 916 parts manual on ebay today, 2xb1 and later. $100 bucks and worth it.

So you do not need the parts breakdown of the parking brake for that machine?

No, not now. Thanks 10 million for the effort!
