980B steering shake

Multiracer ยท 2023-12-31 12:49

We have a 980b serial number 89P3031 We have gone thru all the steering adjustments per the factory manual. However the steering continues to shake violently in both directions. If you pull the floor out of the cab and run it the hydraulic valve is moving in and out on its own. Is there a buffer or a set of springs inside this that may have worn out or broke ? Thanks for any input

Your problem is in the cab. Check your cab mounts thoroughly. I know it sounds crazy but it took me a while to figure it out, but thats what it was.

Yes check out the cab mounts but also have you checked the rod ends on the linkage from the steering column to the hydraulic steering valve and the mounts for that valve? Along with any mounts for the column. One more thing is look at the front of the steering column under the mount and above the steering box, there should be a pipe plug there try putting some oil in there to lube the splines of the steering shaft. Also how are the pins and bushings for the steering cylinders and the center pins for the loader. Any looseness or play can cause shaky steering in Cat loaders of that vintage.
