988B doesnt start

gladiatore · 2015-04-26 11:29

Hi guys here again, i have been fixing a 988b that was stopped for more than 1 year i just install (hyd pumps, tranny pump, acumulators, and other things not relationed with engine), btw the problem because the machine stop was just HYD pumps no more, engine was in very good condition. yesterday i try to start machine and started (for like 20 sec) and throw black smoke, after that even with starter fluid i have no smoke at all and dont try start. also fuel pump is direct (no solenoid attached) my cuestion is does this machine has a fuel shut off valve? why even with fluid starter i dont get any smoke? thanks in advance

I don't think there is a shut off valve, at least not the ones I worked on. Seems the steel fuel lines go from the tank up to the primary strainer inside the two doors behind the cab, on some the fuel priming pump is there on others it may be down on the engine near the secondary filter. If this has set for a year I would start by pulling the fuel strainer and clean that, remove the hose going into the gear pump on the injection pump and make sure you can pump the fuel out there. Then remove the hose on the inlet to the secondary filter and crank the engine over some to see if the gear pump will push the fuel to the filter. Then install a new filter filled with clean fuel. Then loosen a couple fuel injection lines at the pump and crank over some to see if you are getting fuel there. If so I'd tighten and try starting once more. Just had another idea, maybe pull the air intake off the turbo inlet to be sure the turbo is not seized up not letting air into engine. Sometimes carbon falls off things and can plug up an engine that sets for a long time. Also any chance some critters built a nest in the intake or exhaust? Down your way I might be worried about snakes too! Would not want to upset some of those guys!

well yesterday i filled the strainer and the fuel filter with new diesel, and not helped, what i was thinking was to put a bucket full of diesel over the hood so for gravity goes again, but as you said i didnt check the intake or exhaust, so i will do that first(btw many snakes in that area where i fix this machine so i will be careful, thanks ken

Check out the fuel shut off solenoid. Later Bob

Depending on the vintage of this machine I believe some are energized to run and other energized to stop. I know if it is of the energize to stop version if the throttle cable is good you can kill it just like the old Cats. That is pull back on the throttle to shut it off. Would need the full s/n to check which this one has. Probably not important at this point but if it is energize to stop I believe they use output from the "R" terminal on the alternator to activate a relay to power the shutdown solenoid.

My thought on checking fuel coming from the gear pump on the injector pump was to confirm that fuel was getting from the tank through the strainer and to the secondary filter so that would help narrow down where the problem might be. Then removing a couple fuel lines off the injection pump and cranking would do two things. One bleed out any air that may be in the system from sitting and also let you know if the shutdown solenoid was working. Actually if it is an energize to run style system you should be able to hear it go click when the key is turned on and off. Energize to stop will not go click as it needs the input from a running alternator to power it.

It's energize to stop with R terminal and relay. When off the key switch grounds the relay trigger so a short to ground of the wiring might cause trouble. Take wire off of solenoid to test. Later Bob

Not to be picky but from 50W0001 to 50W03776 the shut down solenoid was powered by a push button to the right of the key switch in the right dash panel and the ground was at the solenoid so a short in wiring could not cause a no start. That's why knowing the s/n is so important. I know some at least of the new models had a control box on the right side of the engine compartment that controlled the shut down solenoid and on that one a short may be possible cause of no start. Not really sure what the advantage of adding all this wiring and controls to a simple system could be. One hot wire to push button in cab, one wire from push button to solenoid and a short ground wire from solenoid to engine and you are good for ever! If shut down did not work just hook test light to wire at solenoid and push "STOP" button, light comes on solenoid is bad. No light then check at button if power there then the problem is in the one wire to the back. Throw in relays and controllers and you could be busy checking things all afternoon while boss is screaming his head off!

wel Ken and Bob, after spending some time and fix small problems I found why didnt start machine, in the line from strainer to gear pump a hornet made nest so was all full of mud, i cleaned that, put fresh diesel in a bucket and feed machine in gravity and worked great, thaks for all the help as always you save my day

Well I guess I was close in my first reply, about critters plugging something up. I was thinking intake or exhaust but turns out the problem was in the fuel line. Glad we could help in a small way. Nice thing about these older style machines it is most of the time some basic thing that will stop them. NOt like the newest machines where something as simple as a sensor out of calibration will stop machine from working and if you don't have the Cat ET program and laptop there is nothing you can do but call in someone. So what is the next project? You need to keep me thinking as I turned 65 last thursday and like they say: "If you don't use it you loose it"

Italian? Have any experience with Vespas? Wife bought herself one a little over a year ago. Not exactly heavy equipment but it is a GTV300 so for a Vespa it's big!

well i love bikes, (not small ones, i own a honda valkyrie) but i think i found the close manual you need, is from a 250, but very similar, all others are in italian, i hope this work for you http://www.gtsownersclub.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=28

Well the one that pooped the rod out was still sitting where it was when it died, we did steal the lower radiator pipe off it to fix the other one after it ran over the little rock. That one, the one with the loose transmission was still working but as the stripping project was done for the season we did a complete oil change on it and parked it out back. There may be a project for it putting in a new section of road in the quarry it will be used for but the way management drags their feet that may not ever happen. As for actually fixing properly either one don't think that is in the cards, management tends to wear blinders, what they don't see they don't worry about till they need something. Very sad that a major company is run this way and it gets worse every day!

Thanks, Gives me better idea of how this scooter is built! Valkyrie has almost the same size engine as the 988B! I have two Harley Sportsters and some old XS400-650 Yamahas. One Sportster has a sidecar as does one of the XS400's.

well i worked with bacini and marmi e graniti dítalia. and yes Ken my Honda is a monster engine for a bike, but the ride is great and i dont change her for other (ok maybe a goldwing, or a fat boy), I like more turism bikes because i love travel with them, and now I hate spend 8 hours of driving in a unconfortable bike, when i was in my 20's I dont care now really i look for a confortable bikes
