i have a 941b that needs tranny work and it has been narrowed down to a forward/reverser seal how much does a seal kit run for the tranny? my grandfather and i will be doing the work ourselves as he is like a master mechanic and has all the tools.
I can get you an idea of price, but to do it I'd need the Machine Serial Number, Trans Serial Number, & Trans Arrangement Number. There are too many options to guess at it.
well that could be a problem cause i have no clue on any of that and the machine has sat for 5 years so bees nests abound plus im to busy to get to my grandfathers house at the moment ill see what i can do by the way what would an altinator run for a 3304 cause she needs that water pump seals and has some leaky cylinders
Well my hats off to ya, for wanting too learn, get down there an run the bees off, take a couple cans of WD 40, and spray that cat down. bees don't like that. your lucy that old grandpa has the machine. sam
thanks man but ill use hvac grade bee spray and mabey some either
oh yeah this aint the only thing we have we got 2 d7 3ts and a late model d4 7u with all the bells and whistles of the day
i think you want to do abit more investigation first before you pull it to 1000 pieces.full pressure check of transmission for starters. these trans are very bulletproof. But they do have afew weeknesses. No1 is if trans oil cooler has leaked and water has got into trans. Earlier models all clutch plates were bronze and wasn,t so much of a problem. Later machines had a paper composition plates in fwd and rev clutchs, this will turn to papermashe with water. So trans will slip. Also first gear in these trans is what is called a rotating clutch. and there was a number of seal updates on them. they can fail and you will have no drive in 1F and 1R. other gears will be fine. But pressure test will show this problem. Other thing that is a common fault is a blown o ring on feeder sleeve pipe to torque converter. This will have symptons of no drive in all gears. again pressure test picks thisup fast. From memory was a circlip on sleeve that alot of people put sleeve in wrong way round or forget circlip altogether. This can be fixed in place, no need to pull tranny. Not easy but do able. Don,t remember pressures offhand but speed clutch should be about 350psi and direction clutch 300psi. Find yourself a service manuel and read up all about it. spent alot of my early days in, on, and under D4Ds and 941s. cheers merv.
well we found a metal ring in the trans oil and we went through every possible reason she just stopped moving in any gear so we have to pull the tranny and we have a huge mechanics manual so we've checked it all and weve even shown an older cat mechanic who worked on these machines the metal o-ring and he said it was from the forward/reverser or something like that so we are finaly going to get to this project in spring and shes an earlier model thanks for the info though
Yeah finding metal in filters is a differnt scenario. strange not moving in any gear. Had a circlip come off turbine in t/c once on D4E and it destroyed itself. Again filters full of aluminium so yeah strip down. be sure to replace all seals and bearings and thrust washers too. rotating clutch i talked about is last pack, replace both those seals. clutch pistons seals are all teflon and i replace them too. Fairly straight forward, book tells it all. good luck merv
well the story is my grandfather was grading a hill at his house and the tranny lost all the pressure and the machine rolled down the hill to where it has been sitting for the past 5-7 years or so we didnt get to doing Any work on it till about 3 years ago when we figured it all out so we would have to pull the tranny
don,t really sound right ? for it to suddemly loose all drive, in all gears unless pump drive gear came loose. Had a thought just then could have sheared the drive spline on the torque converter turbine. This is the little shaft from converter output into transmission. Early ones were weak, and there was a updated shaft. this could be most likely cause if all your pressures are ok. converter can be removed by itself. Our D4D had this problem once. But if there was significant amounts of metal in suction screen and/or filter then you gotta investigate it merv
i don't believe i said any thing about the filter we found a steel o-ring when we drained the oil the second time while working on it in fact i don't think we checked the filter so i don't know whats in the filter
