Adjusting tracks on a 700H

CountryBoy685 ยท 2011-02-06 16:28

On a 700H, I found the grease fitting to pump grease into, to tighten the tracks up but were is the bolt to turn to release the tension to drop the tracks. The tracks were pretty packed with mud from backfilling on a forced sewer main job, but i have got to use it to redo a building pad and would like to drop them a littte bit back to 2" of drop instead of banjo string tight. Is it in there were the grease fitting is and I just overlooked it? Thanks.. Great website by the way!

On most excavator grease adjusters, the zerk is screwed into a larger hex headed fitting, this is the grease check valve. Track adjusters have more pressure on them than a grease zerk can handle, so the check valve is a necessary component. Typically, you put a wrench on the hex of the grease check valve and unscrew it. Loosen it gently though, there's a lot of pressure on that valve. Turn it a quarter turn and see if it releases grease. If not, another quarter turn. But it shouldn't require more than a couple of turns to release the track.

how much greese does it usually take to toghten the tracks

a lot. If your going from really loose to proper sag it could take more then a full tube.

Did you clean the tracks and make sure the slack is on top and your on a smooth flat surface? Dosen't take much to bind up the slack adjusters. If this dosen't help take a look at where the crome and you yoke meet. If it looks like it hasn't move in years it may be seezed up.

You'll hafta to take the entire shield off not just the zerk cover, borrow or buy a grease fitting cleaning tool, install new zerk, the tool injects oil into the cylinder by hitting it with a hammer. Then just pump the track up and release it a few times to get the oil out and make sure its moving free. Fyi the bolts that hold the shield will most likely be seized theres one on the inside u can't get with and impact take that one out first.
