Can anyone help us out of a discussion here over how much a cold start advance helps with starting.....friend has a motor w/ Bosch rotary that should fire at 3.5 degs and it advances 5 degs to 8.5 when cold to help starting........but on a Ford engine with inline pump I have when it was originally set at 14 degs and would start a treat, but ran hot & had a high speed misfire, so I set it to 23 degrees and it powered away lovely, I have advanced the timing to cure the mis-fire and give it more power (longer burn period = more calorific power) and of course the trade off is it is a right s0d to start...... I understand all the points about lower compression = lower combustion temps & vice versa....higher compression better burn and hotter engine
