There are different kinds of mechanized access systems as well as the individual types might also be called a”cherry picker” or”scissor lift” They’re usually employed for temporary, adaptive access functions like construction and maintenance work or from firefighters for emergency access, which distinguishes them in permanent access equipment such as springs. They’re made to lift restricted weights — usually under a ton, even though some have a higher safe working load (SWL) — differentiating them from most kinds of cranes. They are typically capable of being put up and run by one individual. Irrespective of the job they’re used forairborne work platforms can offer extra features beyond transportation and accessibility, including being outfitted with electric sockets or compressed air compressors for power tools. They might also be equipped with specialist equipment, like carrying frames for glass. Underbridge units can also be available to lift down operators to a work place. As its name implies, cherry pickers were originally developed to ease the choosing of cherries. Jay Eitel invented the apparatus in 1944 following a frustrating day spent picking cherries with a ladder. He moved on to start the Telsta Corporation, Sunnyvale, CA in 1953 to fabricate the device.
My local utility had a big one out the other day, over 100', 150' maybe. Working on the big towers that serve the big industrial plants in my area, some of the largest electrical loads in the state I'm told. 40 years ago, I saw a buddy fly his ultralight into them. He failed to notice the much smaller bonding/grounding wire on top, hit it, ZAP, instantly on fire, then the wreckage dropped to the ground about 80'. He had a sore shoulder, that was it, he's still walking around to this day, amazing! I had a ring side seat as I was above him, I wish I had a video of it.
