First I want to thank you guys for the advice on changing the waterpump on my dozer. I would not have figured it out in a million years. Now I have a different problem... the steering clutch on the right hand side is not working at all. I am trying to take it out to look at it. The book is not a lot of help. I have the bolts out of the brake drum. And one pin out of the brake bands. My question is what more do I need to do before i can lift the steering clutch out? Best Regards Darrell
You need to removed the 2 pines from the brake band and loose the bolt adjustement under the stering cluch housing for turning the brake band and make sure all the bolt each side drum are removed and if your stering cluch is not loosend just noke on with a hammer because the flanche each side have a lip and you need 1/8" loose each side for pull out
sounds like you are into it already, with the fuel tank out or the way and all. you need to disconnect the brake band from the pivot and actuating rod on the frone, do not remove the pivot pin in the rear, you will use the band to remove the clutch. loosten the bolt under the steering clutch housing, it keeps the band close to the drum for easier braking. remove the bolts on the inside of the steering clutch and see if the clutch pack will slide into the drum about 1/4 inch. work it around to get it to go in. you need this clearance to get the clutch past the throwout bearing, which is on the side that you took the bolts out of. next, attach a hoist to the brake band once you rotate it to the top to hold the drum and clutch. now remove the outside bolts holding the drum and remove the clutch and brake drum together. you need to turn the drum as you remove the bolts so jacking it up helps or the machine will just move a little as you rotate the drum. if the clutch pack will not slide into the drum, you have few options. i have gotten them out with digging bars and such prying it past the throwout bearing and i have also sacrificed the drum to get it out and start over. once out, slide the clutch ot of the drum and disassemble it. be cautious as the clutch is under spring pressure. i put it in a press and hold the center of the assembly tight then loosen the bolts and then let off the press slowly to relieve the pressure. if it is stuck in the drum and you do get it out in one piece, put it in the press, remove the bolts, let off the pressure and then remove each disc slowly with some tapping to release it from the rust it has accumulated against the drum. i hope this helps.
