Gang leaves hole in the wall after using JCB(Kato) to raid ATM The JCB used by the gang to steal an ATM machine By Eimear Ni Bhraonain and Tom Brady Saturday June 06 2009 THIEVES who used a digger to steal a cash machine from a popular truck stop literally left a hole in the wall yesterday. The gang used a JCB(kato), which was on a nearby building site, to rip the ATM from the side of the building at Mother Hubbards in Moyvalley, Co Kildare, on the N4. They transferred the bank machine into a getaway vehicle before making their escape with €171,000 some time after 2am. The JCB was left at the scene. Shocked staff arrived at the busy premises yesterday morning to discover the gaping hole in the side of the restaurant. But it was business as usual at the rest stop as diners tucked into lunch despite a massive hole in the corner of the restaurant. Bemused customers watched as gardai carried out a forensic examination of the scene. Gardai said the gang used the mechanical digger to smash their way through the restaurant roof and as the wall collapsed, the raiders scooped up the "hole in the wall" machine into the JCB(Kato) bucket, loaded it into their getaway vehicle and then made off -- without awakening a truck driver, who had been asleep in his parked cab. Staff pointed out that whoever drove the digger had previous experience of using the machine. This appeared in the paper last Saturday. Stock

wow, you'd think a man that could run a hoe that good would just get a job as an operator and not have to tear a building down to get a few grand and jail time

  2. #2HEO Girl2009-06-10 15:40

Woooooow. That is messed up! In a cool kind of bad way . . I think The trucker must have been one heavy sleeper!

  3. #3special tool2009-06-10 15:42

A few grand? That equals $241,110.00 in US dollar. That's almost a quarter million dollars. Take a few hours on the hoe to make that.

  4. #4CAT D9H2009-06-10 15:59

wow thats crazy , a quater million would be nice , but I would rather spend my time on the excavator and make a couple grand the right way

  5. #5HEO Girl2009-06-10 16:03

Well they did work hard for it :tong, finders keepers I knew there was a reason I loved excavators lol

Something similar happened back in the 90's when I was working south of Pittsburg PA in Butler. Couple of crooks first stole a dump truck and a rubber tire loader from the county garage, then drove to one of those ATMs that sit by itself in a parking lot. An elderly woman across the street was awaken by the noise, came out on her porch and watched the guy back up then drive forward with the loader pounding the ATM. Kept pounding until the whole thing came off its mooring. Scooped it up, thumped it in the dump, and away they went. They weren't there more than a couple of minutes. The truck was found abandoned. When I was finished with the job to come home, I still hadn't heard anything about the ATM.

heard of one of those on the news int he last couple of months where a loader of some kind was used, I'm thinking a skid loader. The theives made a clean get away, and in the process of trying to get the money out they tried dumping the atm down an embankment and somehow upended the loader trapping the operator... and had to call 911...

LoL! I love it when thieves win "The Stupid of the Day Award"

  9. #9gasfield315c2009-06-10 22:06

sorry, i just kinda skipped through it didnt read it all, wouldnt have known how to translate that into american figures anyways...sorry but yeah...for 30 min worth of work on a hoe i'd say thats pretty good operator pay

  10. #10tippatone2009-06-11 01:55

The same thing occured here in GA a few months ago.....guess a couple of operators are starving

  11. #11gasfield315c2009-06-11 11:08

man between the weather and the economy, im starving too, maybe i should tram my hoe to a bank or something.....lol

  12. #12tippatone2009-06-11 11:21

  13. #13HEO Girl2009-06-11 15:02

  14. #14Deere96702009-06-11 16:09

  15. #15gasfield315c2009-06-11 16:36

yeah its not too hard to get equipment keys, all you have to do is go to an equipment dealer and getcha some...

  16. #16HEO Girl2009-06-11 17:24

    *Ponders this thought* :angel

  17. #17wormkiller2009-06-11 20:59

After you get the keys and 'borrow' an excavator HEO, dont forget the important stuff: 1. Dont dig up the ATM while working over the drive motors 2. Take care not to make bucket to cab contact and 3. Be sure to take lots of pictures or video to post on HEF! :cool2

  18. #18HEO Girl2009-06-11 22:27

Thanks for the advice wormkiller! I'll be sure to take lots of pictures and video! I'll send some of that money your way for the advice

They struck again Raiders use JCB to steal cash machine CHARLIE TAYLOR Gardaí are today investigating a robbery in which a mechanical digger was used to remove a cash machine from a bank in Co Kilkenny. The incident took place at about 5.30am at a branch of Bank of Ireland in Graiguenamanagh. Raiders used a JCB to drive into the bank in order to dislodge the ATM. A large section of the front of the bank was damaged during the incident. The branch is directly opposite a Garda station (COP SHOP) but it was unmanned at the time of the raid. A number of garda units from New Ross, Thomastown and Kilkenny city arrived shortly after the incident had taken place but the raiders had already made their getaway. The area remains cordoned off at present while a detailed search takes place. Gardaí have not said how much money was taken during the raid. A similar robbery took place at Mother Hubbard's restaurant in Moyvalley, Co Kildare at about 2am last Sunday. During the incident a significant amount of damage was caused when thieves removed a cash machine from the popular truck stop, using a digger that was located at the back of the restaurant.

They did it again/2 ATM opposite garda station is stolen Friday, 12 June 2009 14:05 Raiders have used a mechanical digger to remove an ATM from a Bank of Ireland branch in Co Kilkenny. The robbery took place at around 5.30am when a JCB was driven directly into the front of the Bank of Ireland branch in Graiguenamanagh. The branch is directly opposite Graiguenamanagh Garda Station, which was unoccupied at the time. Gardaí say a substantial amount of money was taken and they are looking for two cars and a trailer which they believe were used as getaway vehicles. Last Friday, thieves used a mechanical digger to steal an ATM from Mother Hubburd's restaurant near Moyvalley, Co Meath.

How far apart are these 2 places?

  24. #24BlackbeardMX2009-06-12 09:52

This happened where i live about '97. They used a log loader (knuckleboom). They were caught a few days later. I'm pretty sure they didn't even get any money. I don't remember if they couldn't get it open or the machine didn't have any in it. Is it not easier to go get a job to make money? You have to load and move equipment, tear down buildings, load the ATM, haul it to a secure place, and then figure out how to get it open without destroying the money. Maybe the pay is a LITTLE better (if you succeed). Some people work too hard to not work.

  25. #25stock2009-06-12 14:19

As previously posted, nowhere is far from anywhere in Eireann but in linear terms about 70-80 miles

  26. #26mowzall2009-06-12 16:37

But why would you have a quarter million dollars in Mother Hubbards Restaurant Cupboard? :beatsme

  27. #27special tool2009-06-12 16:45

Don't know. Just converting the information given in the thread. $171,000 euros = $241,110 us dollars - at the exchange rate the other day, when I posted that. It is a truck stop that runs 24 hours a day, and they probably didn't want to service the machine every week.

  28. #28mowzall2009-06-12 17:12

That's still $1400 and change per hour for seven days or 17 euros per minute for seven days Is that a normal amount to be kept in ATM's?

  29. #29special tool2009-06-12 17:34

Well, since you are asking, you will see that I said I speculated that they did NOT want to do service once a week. Maybe once a month. Once a month brings us down to $334.87 average an hour usage/withdraw - certainly within reason. Have you seen how much an average over-the-road trucker EATS??

  30. #30stock2009-06-12 17:40

OK OK I know its old EIREANN but come on we are not really that bad,a truck stop that open 24hrs ???? and is robbed by a digger tracked up a main rd even that is too irish for the irish. Stock

  31. #31special tool2009-06-12 17:44

Hey - don't blame me, you are the one who said there was 171,000 euros in that macine. I was wondering why that much money would be there, but I don't know the place.

  32. #32mowzall2009-06-12 18:14

Well thanks for clearing that up for me guy's Ireland is over populated with obese truck drivers paying way too much for their lunch so all the cash from the government stimulus is invested in long term ATM depository and a pandemic of rouge backhoe drivers cruising the streets making unexpected withdrawals is getting the Cop's knickers all wadded up. Got it :drinkup

  33. #33mowzall2009-06-12 18:19

rouge...oops! didn't mean to imply they wear make up, meant to say rogue!

  34. #34stock2009-06-12 18:36

A dept of gratitude Shall we rearrange a few things , Ireland is over populated with obese politicians paid way to much for their services,so all the cash from the previous government stimulus is invested ( NOT IN ANGLO IRISH BANK) in long term ATM depository and a pandemic of rogue government ministers cruising the streets making unorthodox withdrawals to shore up the deficit of the lost Celtic tiger while ensuring the peelers are at home .This may be happen in the dream time but I think it was a miss print and the cash was 17 ish grand and as for the people not phoning the peeler's as a track hoe walked up the road at 05 30am and knocked in the end wall well that just begs belief Stock

  35. #35AtlasRob2009-06-12 18:56

We had a serious spate of these unauthorised nightime withdrawls across the local counties a few years back, and while you kinda have to admire the shear gaul of the operatives ( not operators ) the damage was horrendous, (even the demo guys were embarressed ) it did come to an end when a few people who where known to the police were invited to take a holiday at the authorites expense. Be sure that if they have hit once or twice and got away with it any village or small town is fair game for a plant visit.

  36. #36special tool2009-06-12 19:10

If I was a cop there, I would probably pick an ATM spot right between the previous 2. Then I would park something like a Hyundai shovel there (because it will take 3 times as long as a Cat or Kom) and just wait. Maybe they would take the bait.

  37. #37HEO Girl2009-06-13 00:06

Well since all these buildings are gettin smashed up, you gotta rebuild em right? So that must be job security for some company. .

  38. #38diggerop2009-06-13 02:31

Here in Oz recently the preffered method of withdrawal was to take your gas bottles :cool2 with you, oxy acetelene or lpg and fill the ATM up with gas, have some sort of remote ignition source , stand back, fire and then pick your money up off the footpath, no PIN required. Very noisy I imagine and again very rough on the buildings and pedesterians, must be why they did it while no one was around, safety first:thumbsup

  39. #39HEO Girl2009-06-13 13:42

How come nothing cool like this happens in the US? . . . Or in Maine for that matter . .
