Back hoe Ford 655A

Bought second hand 655A a few weeks ago. Coming home from doing light work, turned in bumpy farm road and in to a field. Changed gear from third to second but digger will not move so towed her into the field out of the way. The engine starts fine but with the shuttle in forward, neutral and reverse. She used to only start in neutral. Still no transmission....HELP.

Check the trans oil, check the fuses, check the small pedal in the floor(clutch cutout) if it's sticking down a little it will trip the micro switch, check the switch in the loader lever (clutch cutout). Hope this may give you some help!.

Thank you for responding. Transmission oil full and one 10 amp fuse blown but replaced it and made no difference. I'm interested in this clutch cut out switch possibility as it shows external signs of corrosion from below. Digger does not start when gear selector is in gear but as above does start with shuttle lever engaged.

Been out to the digger again. The small pedal is not sticking down and when I move the sensor arm in and out I can hear the switch operating. Do you have any further thoughts? Many thanks.

I have been back out again and this time waggling wires about under the other side of the transmission. I now have transmission but engine still cranks with shuttle lever in any position. Hopefully the transmission will keep going. Off to test drive it but not too far from home. Thanks for your assistance but will let you know if I have any further problems.

Did you check the switch in the loader lever? and can you hear or test the cutout valve at trans. Is the gear shift lever still in gear (four speed and can you change it thru the 1-4 and feel it shift with the engine off. Have you checked you linkage down from the f/r to the control to see if a pin/roll pin is out or broken not making a positive shift to move the spool thru the detent into forward or reverse.

That is some good news, hopefully some checking on the harness and tightening some connects will solve most of your issues.
