580sm with clam bucket. Broke the dozer blade cutting edge. This had been a municipal machine used mostly for loading salt and moving snow. Very rusty mounting surface. I'm beating off bug chunks of rust and wondering if there isn't an epoxy or other type of bedding compound to help support the cutting edge?
Rephrase your thoughts. All I see is a hole where you say that a bolt (singular) sheared. Quality bolts and clean mating surfaces are all that's needed. Oh, and, torqued to spec.
Thanks. I should not have used the picture. Sorry for the confusion. The mating surface is rusty. The picture is from the middle, after the old edge was removed and a significant amount of rust was knocked off. I cleaned some more and wire wheeled before new edge and new bolts.
Salt impregnated and corroding steel will need to be dressed back, get to clean steel and washed to reduce salt residues. That stated if you keep losing base metal thickness consider replacing the edge support lip as too far gone, bedding material will not help if the steel is rotten.
Doesnt look like much to be concerned with we beat that thick flaky stuff off every time an edge is changed we do a lot of salt too a needle scaler sure makes it a lot easier
We used to use a grinder to knock off the heavy rust. Then they came out with those high speed sanding disks that really dig fast. A dust mask is the least amount of PPE required for those. When we install the edge we snapped the bolts up fast with air and then slammed the head of the bolt with a big hammer and punch. Then we would torque the bolts proper.
Needle scaler is the cat's azz for that stuff. Then a pass with the grinder to make sure there is no raised metal around the bolt holes.
