16H, I heard something about it on another forum (DHS?), and if it's the same one, I wouldn't read to much in to it. To me it just sounded like they were pullin each other's chains. As to the 5000 series from Cat, they discontinued all of them about 2 years ago, I think. Hope i helped -Jim

What happened to Big Cat Shovels? Caterpillar sold the intellectual rights, designs, and patents to Terex back in 2003 (approx.) This included the 5110B (275,000lbs), 5130B (400,000lbs), 5230B (723,000 lbs) excavators and shovels. I wonder if Cat will get back into the big excavator market? Not that a 385CL is small at 187,000 lbs. This leaves Komatsu and Hitachi to dominate the mining class machines. (Liebherr and Terex O&K as well). With the mining industry growing around the world as well as heavy civil projects, I am suprised Cat is not in this market.

The Caterpillar/Terex deal fell over in Jan 2004, and did not proceed, due to substantial differences in values attributed to parts of the deal, between the two parties .. See page 58 of this MineExpo 2004 information sheet, as to Caterpillar's attitude and decisions relating to big shovels. http://catnewsinfo.cat.com/cda/comp...uredFileServletJSP?languageId=7&fileId=188188 The bulk of the 5000 series shovel production was ceased, in Cat's words .. "due to high costs, low volumes, and the limited breadth of the 5000 series line .. " (they didn't really care to mention they were basically a POS, and gained a reputation from Day One, as an item, no-one in their right mind would buy .. ) The 5090 continues as a production line model in the new 385 nomenclature. I guess they wanted to hide the fact that it was still a 5000 series machine. Cat are desperate to have a really good, large shovel range to complete their lineup .. but they were too late on the big shovel scene, with a range of shovels in the 5000 series, that did nothing for Cats good name, with their many inherent reliability problems. The big shovel market is dominated by O&K, Liebherr and Demag (now owned by Komatsu), with their very reliable shovels. Cat have given the go-ahead for those dealers who wish, to sell O&K shovels, via individual sales agreements with O&K/Terex, but parts backup is not part of the sales agreements.
